  • Weight loss and PCOS

Do you think even on the atkins diet u lose weight more slowly than a regualr person? Mine just isn't coming off very fast. It is discouraging! I have been diagnosed with PSOC for about 8 years now. When I am on this diet and I lose wieght my periods do get better. I'm lucky I don't have the issue with facial hair. But my weight has just exploed and I have dandriff, even the dandriff gets better the more weight I lose! I read a post on here somewhere that someone's skin looked darker under their arms I thought I was just a wierdo but I guess it is another side effect of the PCOS. I have two boys I was not diagnosed until after my first child, then never ever taking birth control it took six years to finally get pregnant again, I thought I would never have another baby. I took clomid and had surgery on my ovaries nothing worked until I did atkins and lost some weight then I got pregnant. I'm hoping that happens again , I would love to have a little girl in the mix!!!!!

    Re: Weight loss and PCOS

You're lucky you got pregnant naturally and have no facial hair problems. Most women with PCOS struggle with these two problems. I have PCOS and I have been on Atkins for a month and half now and have lost 13 lbs. Atkins works, but it does take longer to lose those pounds for us compared to a person without PCOS...at least that's my observation.

I was told by my Endocrinologist that the skin darkening condition that you mentioned is due to a condition called Insulin Resistance that most people with PCOS suffer from. Of course, weight loss helps with all these conditions. Maintaining a healthy weight, a healthy diet and exercise is the key to tackling PCOS.

      Re: Weight loss and PCOS

Been there, done that, and back again! Back about 10 years ago, before PCOS was even discussed, I found out all about it on my own--i had the weight problems, infertility, etc. Nothing helped! BUT on my own i learned about the insulin resistance and the effect on weight and my infertility (we were trying to concieve at the time). I took it upon myself to start the "diet" and lost 18 pounds the first two weeks, periods got better, everything got better--still needed help to get pregnant (which we did, 3 times twice with infertility treatment and twice on our own--but we lost one). I had trouble losing weight after my second, the atkins wasn't working as well. I think its slower too--i lost 9 pounds this past week (on it again) but then gained a pound back and nothing is going on either way now. But keep treckin! and chin up--it may be slower, but its working! Plus you are being proactive and taking charge of your life!
