For about 2 1/2 years before I started Atkins I was only getting a period about once every 4 or 5 months. I avoided a Dr. because I was scared, but I finally broke down and saw a gyn in January. I also started Atkins that month and got a 6 day long period in Feb. My doctor decided to start me on Provera 10 days a month to induce periods and try to thin the lining of my uterus. I have to do this for 3 months and if it doesn't work he says I'll need a D and C, because it is possibly adenomyosis. He told me the provera will make me nuts and really alter my moods for the next few months. My question is, has anyone here used it? Side effects, weight gain, etc? I'm really not looking forward to 3 months being crankier than I already am. I'm half tempted to say just give me the damn d and c and we'll start over. Anyway, any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the ramble.

I took provera long before starting Atkins. It made me just a slight bit moody, but nothing I (or those around me) couldn't tolerate. But, it did make me VERY sick to my tummy.

I dind't have periods but maybe twice a year before ATkins and never needed a D&C. Also, once starting Atkins I didn't need provera to induce periods at all. They came all by themselves. If you just started Atkins in Jan. it may take awhile for your periods to regulate. But, if you stick with the plan, they WILL. And eventually that uteran lining will thin on it's own.

I took Provera and hated it. It made me sick to my stomach and gave me occasional headaches (I rarely get headaches) and made me slightly moody the first time I ever took it but it seems to get worse over time. This time when I took it, I was such a Biatch to my poor husband, I stopped taking it and refused to take it again. Plus it didn't work anyways. My doctor said he would never recommended a D&C because he said, doing it to thin the uterus is something that should be done as a last resort because of the delicacy of the procedure and it thins the uterus but doesn't take care of the period problem anyway. His advice to me, was to lose 10% to 30% of my body weight (about 20-30 lbs) and it probably would return. Then we would see. And he was right, I've lost only 15 lbs so far and my period has returned spontaneously 2 months in a row and the first month I was only "play-Atkins-ing" and lost 10 lbs when the first time it showed up! :yikes

If I were you, I would really wait on getting a D&C if this provera doesn't work and give Atkins a chance to take its course. They always say that is not "painful" and there is "slight cramping" but it is painful and lots of cramps! I had to nurse my friend thru one and she has a high tolerance for pain. It didn't last forever (a few days) but she said if she had known, she would have never ever done it. Having said that, Provera doesn't work the same on everyone and it depends on the dose. the higher the dose, the more moody you become. Mine last time was higher because the first 2 times, didn't do anything, so they upped it. Still nothing and my poor husband really suffered for it. The provera also might slow your weight loss or stall you, so be prepared for that.

I had to take it after I had surgery to remove my right ovary and I had no problems at all.

thanks everyone. i have quit the provera. it made me moody and gave me severe headaches. the reason the dr wanted to do the d and c is because there is a possibility of andomyosis, which is similar to endometriosis, except that the lining attaches itself outside the uterus and can do damage to other organs. The provera hasn't helped, and the headaches are unbearable. I also went on a cheat streak for 6 days and gained 9 lbs. I can't blame this on the meds, but i really feel more together when i'm off it. I am gonna give this lifestyle a chance to regulate me before i go back to the dr. thanks for your replies.

              Re: provera

I know this post is a little old, but I thought in case there is someone else out there like me (who has just been diagnosed with PCOS) then maybe there is some information to glean.

The dr put me on Provera for 10 days or to start my TOM. Once that happens I switch to BCP. I'm on my fifth day of the Provera and I haven't noticed anything at all except feeling bloating once in a while and having some cramping. Nothing major and no mood swings.

I do have really bad heartburn and I don't know if it is caused by the medicine or if it is just that I'm letting too many things creep in my diet. However, I'm fixing that now and have decided to start back on Induction follow the plan through.

Best wishes to all you ladies who also have this syndrome and I hope you keep us all updated on your progress.

P.S. I take it at night right before I go to bed so I hope the worst side effects occur while I'm asleep.
