  • PCOS..it's tough!

well, just wanted to start a new thread...

I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and it hasn't been easy.

The period that hides and seek, but when it arrives won't leave for weeks...
the creeping weight gain, the embarrassing chin hair..it has not been an easy road, especially at 22 and looking forward to start a new family [as most may know, conceiving a child is very difficult with PCOS].

This diagnosis has severely depressed me to the point that a simple thing as going out became an arduous task. I'm hoping that with with this new lifestyle change [combining Atkins with physical activities] I can get a chance at normalcy...

Any other ladies right now dealing with PCOS?

    Blessings to all

I don't have PCOS but know many who do. You are doing the right thing going to a low carb way of eating. Take care of yourself by getting healthy & find yourself a great OB/GYN!

    Good luck on your journey!

      Re: PCOS..it's tough!

hi! i was diagnosed with PCOS since i was 17 and the only way i felt better was when i was prescribed the pill (diane mite 35..at least is called like that in europe). it really helped with everything: i stopped gaining weight, i stopped growing hair-they actually got less, specially on arms and body-, my mood was more or less stabile...
Now is the third year i am taking it and i feel stupid not to have taking it before!!
If diet helps im not so sure, otherwise i think all the doctors i've been (at least 6 different ones) would have told me.
      how is it going now?

          Re: PCOS..it's tough!

I know *exactly* how you feel. I went through my teens and early 20s convinced I had "bad" genetics. Hairy everything, no reliable period (it would come when it felt like coming) moody and fat despite my best efforts.

I managed to lose some weight with exercise and dieting (by dieting, I mean not eating at all) and I found out I was pregnant. I was shocked, but very happy.

After having my daughter, I felt pretty normal. Then the symptoms came back. Facial hair, weight gain, irregular bleeding...I finally cried to my nurse practitioner who told me after a sonogram that I had PCOS and had probably suffered with it my entire life (!!!)

So I know how it feels to deal with it. It got in the way with wanting a second child, and right now I am just focusing on getting regulated and losing weight.

I don't even know where I was going with that, but I thought I would share.

            Re: PCOS..it's tough!

I was just diagnosed last month. I went to the gyno after a period that wouldnt go away for more than 2 weeks. I have been regular my entire life to that 1 long period. I was run though a number of blood tests and come to find yesterday that my 3 months standing sugar level is high. 5.9, which the gyno considers as pre-diabetes. It is all from the darn pcos. I have been heavy for most of my life and no matter what I tried, I couldn't lose the weight. I have since March been working out with a trainer and eating a low fat, diet with what I thought were healthy choices. My gyno said yesterday to go Atkins because the carbs are poison for me. I went and bought two atkins books and started today. I had 2 fried eggs for breakfast and bacon. I can't belive that eating bacon instead of an orange is better for me. But I am going to try. Anyone have any meal plans of what they are during induction? Any thought or comments about all of this pcos, atkins and ect would be appriciated.

              Re: PCOS..it's tough!

I have PCOS too. Im 34, and in March was told I am type two diabetes. I have been struggeling with weight, acne...all of it!

My Dr gave me 50mg of spironolactone once a day. Boy..between the diet, the medication and controlling my blood sugar...it has all changed! The hormonal acne is gone, I have dropped 25 pounds...and I feel so much better. I still have 20 more to go..

Atkins is awesome. Getting those bad carbs out of your life is going to make a huge difference. I can only say, try to do a good clean induction...with no cheats and you will see! I also added making sure I drink 100oz a day...

I wish I did this years ago. My typical meals are for breakfast, sausage and egg scramble, or an omlet filled with mushrooms, cheese, bacon or sausage.
Luch is a nice big salad with grilled chicken or steak!

Dinner more steak or fish or something with hamburger, and of course veggies!

                Re: PCOS..it's tough!

Thank you for the advice. I was put on metformin 2 weeks ago and have been working out hard with a trainer for the last few months too. Hopefully by cutting out the carbs I will see some real results soon.
