  • personal TMI question...please help

Ok, i'm posting in the PCOS board because I am on metformin and while I don't have PCOS, I am Inuslin Resistant and my doc is always referring to stuff about PCOS but i know i don't have it (she's told me I don't and I've NEVER been irregular - I've seriously been on time every month since I was 13.

anyways - the question I have is this. I've been bleeding between periods. Is this normal on a low-carb diet? Is this normal with metformin? I've been on met for over a year and a half now. I'm also on Ocella (generic form of yasmin) birth control and have been on that since the same time as metformin (october 2007)...

I HAVE heard that estrogen is stored in fat cells and women on atkins when they are losing fat tend to bleed because of losing weight - is this true?

I went to the doc two months ago when this happened and she said it was normal..but i'm just curious now as this has never happened before. thanks!!!!

I don't have PCOS either so pardon me for popping in but I read your post and know what you're talking about. I've had breakthrough bleeding everytime I've been on Atkins. It is very common with low carb diets. Many women, though, are lucky enough to have their periods even out. I shouldn't have another for a couple of months (taking Seasonale) but I'm feeling every symptom of PMS right now! I haven't found anything I can do to make things adjust, the body just adapts over time.

When I restarted this time, it was a problem and I googled "irregular period low carb diet" and similar search terms. LOTS of results. There were enough results that I knew I was not alone and it was normal. There are many posts online across the web with responses from doctors too.

Okay, now I know I am not alone. I have been doing this this month. But the last two months my period themselves, have been so much more 'reasonable.' Much less clotting, less flooding, I was having at least one truly horrible day for flooding each cycle, and the last two months I noticed how much better it was.

I am not on any birth control or other meds, had my tubes tied 16 years ago after baby number 4! But it is good to read it is common. I wasn't planning to see the doctor until it is yearly exam time this Fall.
