Not to take away from your question, but I have a question for you...
When were you diagnosed? Did they put you on met right away? What kinds of tests did they take, etc.
I have an appointment next Wed for PCOS testing/evaluation. I putting together research and questions for the doctor, so hearing about others' experiences will help.
Thanks!

I was diagnosed a little over a year ago..... I went to my OBGYN for a prenatal visit I was about 5 weeks preg..... he had to do a transvaginal ultrasound and I went into his office to talk after wards and he told me I was overweight and stuff due to PCOS ......I have never heard of it and didn't know what it was so I came home and started looking on the internet for answers......I found them ....I found out that was why I didn't get preg after being off BC pills for 7 months (my baby truly is a miracle) and why my hair keeps coming out, I have skin tags on my neck and a few stray hairs on my chin that I shave off...... I could prob keep going on but I will stop there..... he mentioned on my 6 week check up after I had my baby that he would put me on glucopahge if I didn't start having reg. periods and it should help me with the weight loss.....I had some blood work done yesterday not sure everything they checked but I know one was kidneys...... I have found alot of answers at www.soulcysters.com alot of information..... Hope everything goes ok with your appt.Karen

I'm taking met for diabetes. I had a some diarhea the first week and will get nauseous if I take it on an empty stomach. Never had any vomiting. It did take about a month before my blood sugar readings started to go down. I don't know how long it might take to work for PCOS.Cheryl

Re: side effects of Met
I've been told that I'm a rare case, but my body is very sensitive to Metformin. One and it's certain that I'll be bloated and sick for the rest of the day. Sometimes all it takes is the smell to cause vomiting for me. I've had to be taken off it, naturally, but I've heard that it can actually speed the weight loss up in atkins as well as help with PCOS. So for all the lucky people that can take it- go for it! ^_^230/154?

Re: side effects of Met
As for me, only thing I have w/ Metformin is diahrreah! So far so good. I've been taking it before, I got prego and then stopped and I'm on it again. I've been doing Atkins for 1 week.
Good luck w/ Met and hope it helps you.

Re: side effects of Met
A few years ago, I was on Metformin, 500 mg, 3 times a day. I gradually worked up to the amount in a month, but still experienced cramping, diarreah, and lots of bloating. However, after a couple of months, the side effects didn't go away so I decided to do away with met. For me, it wasn't worth being miserable all the time.

Re: side effects of Met
I know this is alot later than the post, but I was hoping maybe to get an update? Are you still on met, and has it worked? I took it for two weeks, but I had "IBS" symptoms from it...cramps and major diahrea. Especially if I ate lettuce...it would litterally pass without being digested. But I did lose weight, and got a cycle within the first two weeks. That was two years ago, and my current gyno said if I got down to 290 she would give me metformin to start me ovulating. Of course, that jinxed me, and my weight went up after that instead of down.
But I'm back to working on it.

Re: side effects of Met
maribelle did your doc check your hormone levels before she gave you the met? Atkins should vastly improve the insulin interferrance which is what metaforin does and yolu might not need the met to ovulate. hang in there we have had several surprize preggo members after they were suppose to be infertile.by the book atkinseer

Re: side effects of Met
Well, they did test my hormone levels, and they were normal according to them. But I found out the insulin level test they gave me is not that accurate in diagnosing hyperinsulism. They gave me the test where I fasted, and they drew blood, and my levels showed normal. From reading alot of PCOS forums, I should have had the one where I fast, and then they give me a sugary drink and test. But I've really kinda backed off on doctors right now, and am just trying to go it with Atkins. I think if I lose enough weight I will get pregnant again...its just the getting there that is hard.
