  • Thought I'd Share...

Wanted to share for once with someone other than my mom or dad about my PCOS story... I haven't told anyone else (except my roommate)- no friends know- because I'm trying to keep it to myself and then lose a lot of weight by the end of this school year and have them go "WTF?", haha.

It has been really hard though... I'm 20 and was just officially diagnosed in September. For the past year or two it's been REALLY difficult for me to lose weight and exceptionally easy for me to put it on, and over the summer I went off birth control and my period suddenly stopped coming, I was able to gain 8 pounds overnight just from eating 2 slices of pizza, etc.

So I tried Atkins and it was like a miracle: i.e. dropping about 10 lbs in two weeks. Whenever I tried to take a break from it though and have a slice of desert or bowl of cereal I was still gaining 6 or 8 pounds in a single day, so I went off it when school started up and went on Metformin and birth control after I went to see an Endocrinologist and she diagnosed me (I don't know about others here, but it was nice to finally hear that maybe all this tough time wasn't all my fault or something I was just doing wrong...)

That was like another small miracle since I was finally able to count calories and exercise and actually LOSE weight instead of just maintaining.

Now I've kind of hit a wall though and I'm trying Atkins again ... at least for the last 2 weeks of school before Christmas break. I'd really like to break through the 190-pound threshold and get back in to the 180s before x-mas rolls around (along with the pies and cookies that go along with it).

Just wanted to kind of get that out of my system and maybe ask if Atkins is working well for anyone else on Metformin???

If no one responds that's ok, it was basically just a rant for me so I could finally share with someone outside the family, haha. It would be nice to hear about other people's success though.

    >>Whenever I tried to take a break from it>>

There really is no "break" from Atkins ... that's why it's a lifestyle, not a "diet" that you go on and off at will.

    >>along with the pies and cookies that go along with it>>

This will be my 6th Atkins Christmas without "the pies and cookies". I've still had wonderful holidays!

Atkins and sugar isn't a good mix!

I'm well aware that it's a lifestyle choice, but I believe that just because I do low carb does not mean I must deprive myself forevermore of every piece of pie or scoop of ice cream. I think lifestyle choices are only successful if you're able to indulge in moderation- and as I am an avid baker I need to take that night off every couple weeks and do what I love.

I was really hoping more for any tips or success stories related to Metformin mixed with this lifestyle.

You cannot take a day off from Atkins every couple of weeks. It just doesn't work that way. Sorry

I'm on Metformin too, and I've only recently slowed down due to my slacking on exercise. I completely agree with the previous two posters, though, Atkins doesn't work with regular cheating (even if it's once every 2 weeks). You have to commit to it, but I've never looked back, and I've been completely cheat-free since I started (03/14/09). Best of luck to you!

          Goal #3 - 240 - Met 06/20/09! Goal #6 - 210

I have to agree just with experience. I would do really well on Atkins for a while, then I would cheat one day....then that cheat lead right into weeks of doing the very things I can't. Caity, I'm right with you...I can eat a Veggie Sub from Subway and gain 5-6 pounds overnight! It's insane!!! But when I low carb the weight comes off easy.
