        Re: Hey!!! New member/Cyster

Hi one sixty five! I'm in this with you. I've tried Atkins off and on the last year and it has worked...when I"VE worked it. Unfortunately, I fell off the wagon. My addiction is soda. I drink one....then two...then I'm eating bread...then candy. :-( I'm a sugar a holic...like many other women who have PCOS. I wonder what it is about our bodies that craves sugar and complex carbs (that later get turned to sugar)? Anyway, I just wanted to encourage you.

I think I'm going to set a target weight and once I reach that weight I'm going to do something really, really special. I was think that maybe I would put back $30.00 a month (since I won't be buying soda or other junk food) and then after I get to my weight...reward myself with that money to do something super fun! Hope it works.

          Hey ladies!
I've been encouraged by your posts. Especially you, OneSixtyFive. I think the idea of weighing only on certain dates is a super one. I too, tend to get a bit obsessive. Currently I'm weighing twice and sometimes three times a week, then fretting in between! I was diagnosed with PCOS in 1995, then did fertility drugs to have my twins. My youngest daughter came as a surprise 5 years later, but the weight just kept coming on. I now weigh more than I did at 9 months pregnant with twins! Really looking forward to some sisters who are walking this road as well.

Good luck to all of us!

            Re: Hey!!! New member/Cyster

Hey! Another Louisiana girl with PCOS who's on Atkins!

I only recently got diagnosed with PCOS but my doctor said that we really should have been looking for it for years. I started missing cycles for months on end - as many as 6 - when I was 19 years old and my mom dismissed my concerns by saying, "Well as long as the reason isn't because you're pregnant then we're fine."

I honestly wouldn't have known anything about it at all but a nurse at another doctor's office noticed how I held weight around my middle (as opposed to being spread out all around my body) and that I had acne, a moustache, and my hair was falling out but I was only in my early 30's and said, "You need to be checked for PCOS." I was like, "PCO-wha?" and she told me to look it up and make an appointment with my doctor and specifically ask that he test me for it.

Only after I did research did I realize that the reason why Atkins had worked so well for me the first time I did it in my mid-20's but no other diet had succeeded, was because my body just doesn't "do" sugar. When I'm not low-carbing, everything in my body goes out of whack. I'm tired all the time, I steadily gain weight, I even get depressed. But when I'm not taking in all of the sugar and carbohydrates I can sleep 8 hours a night (IN A ROW) and stay awake and alert the other 16 hours of the day.

Mostly, I'm curious from other people to see if my hair starts growing back. I'm by no means bald but a thin ponytail holder has to be wrapped around my hair 4 times before it won't be too loose and fall out. I looked at pictures from when I was in high school and I have significantly less hair than I did back then.

I am not on any medications, just nuvaring birth control (the doctor said it delivers a steady stream of hormones into my bloodstream and was better than the high and low periods that oral birth control caused). Plus, I'm lazy and don't want to take something every single day. Once every 3 weeks works much better for me!

Currently down 24 lbs. but still have 110 lbs. to go. I'll try to keep you all posted as to progress and any changes I notice in my own condition.

43 lbs. down... 94 to go.
