  • PCOS or No?

I am Brand new to the forums and I am getting ready to start the Atkins diet but I do have a question. I am pretty sure I have PCOS but the Dr. hasnt confirmed. I started my periods when i was 14 but they were irregular and lasted less then 5 months and then went away, I havent had a period since. I have always been over weight, I have hair above my lip and on the my chin, i have some discoloration spots on my back and neck and I have a few skin tags. I was checked and I do have IR but no cysts on my overies. My doctor acted like I dont have PCOS because I dont have the cysts but I have everything else. I'm just not sure what to think about this. I was told that you can have all of the symptoms and still not technically have PCOS and that my weight can cause all of the symptoms but im just not sure what to think. Any help or insight would really help. Thanks

You may want to go to a different doctor and get another opinion. I went to my gyn yesterday for the first time and because of my irregular periods, my weight and facial hair, she immediaetly agreed that PCOS was most likely the culprit and ordered tests.

If you really think you have PCOS I would suggest going to a different doc. If you went to your regular general practioner, you may want to go to an obgyn or an endoctrinologist. Just because you don't have the cysts doesn't mean you don't have PCOS.

The one thing I've found with doctors is that you really have to fight for your health. Most doctors are NOT going to fight for you. You have to take control and be proactive in your own health.

I went to a different gyn, a dermatologist and my regular doctor, and NONE OF THEM connected my symptoms to PCOS. It was my electologist and an article about women with facial hair on MSNBC which prompted me to find out about PCOS and go in and request testing. So if you think this is what the problem is, be very proactive for your own health!!!

the reason you gained the weight insulin resistance if you have it can be the cause iof PCOS symptoms so technically your weight could "cause" it.

You can help your PCOS by doing Atkins because Atkins helps the body clear up insulin sensitivity issues.

Blood tests will confirm if you do or don't have PCOS see your doc and ask for them!
