  • Saras birth story/the short version

Sara Therese Grace was born by C- Section on Aug 2nd at 6:17 p.m. She was 6 lbs 13 oz and 18 inches long…a very big girl for being only 35 weeks…

Sorry ahead of time for any typos...

During our usual weekly visit, my doc suggested that he admit me and deliver Sara the following day, her heart rate wasn’t doing as it should have, it wasn’t being “reactive” enough, and her movements had slowed WAYYYY down, so he said his “radar” went up and thought since that was pretty much what had happened to Andrew that he really wanted to get her “out of there” as soon as possible… He didn’t feel that we needed an Emergency C-Section but he didn’t think that she would do well in labor either, so, he admitted me Monday afternoon (Aug 1st) and had me monitored all that day and did an Amnio the following day to check on her lungs…they told us Tue afternoon that her lungs were perfect and that we would have her by that evening… So starving to death and so nervous I wouldn’t have been able to keep anything down anyway, about 5pm they came and took me to labor and delivery to get ready, I was so scared, you know ive never had a C-Section and was freaking out a bit, and so was Robert…They got me ready and took me to the OR, numbed me up, strapped me down and did whatever they usually do… By the way the meds they give you to numb you up, that stuff made my face itch so bad, it was awful, but it distracted me a lot, so that was actually good… Robert was sitting by my head while the doc did his thing, and when it was time for him to take out Sara, he said to Robert “ Wanna watch your daughter be born?” So he stood up and watch as Dr. Rosnes pulled Sara out of me, within a few seconds she started crying, and I was so relieved, that’s what I wanted to hear…they put her on a warming bed and did their newborn exam, while Robert watched and took pictures… I couldn’t really see much, but I could hear her crying so I was very happy… when they were done, Robert brought her over to me for me to see, she was BEAUTIFUL!!! Brownish blonde hair, big dark blue eyes (which Im sure will change soon) just a doll, I didn’t want to hold her because the meds made me feel goofy, but I rubbed her head and told her hello…then Robert and the nurse walked her out and over to the nursery, and I had to lay there waiting for the doc to finish up….which seemed like forever…
When we got to my room, we waited and waited and Robert walked to the nursery a couple of times and was told that they would bring Sara out as soon as they were done with whatever exams they needed to do…then the nurse comes in and says that Saras oxygen wasn’t stable enough for her to leave the nursery yet, I started crying, because I started to think the worst, and I hadn’t even gotten told hold my little girl yet, but about an hour later (about 5 hours after she was born) they finally brought her in…It was total love at first site…just beautiful and nursed like shed done it a million times already…we kept her in our room nearly the whole time, Robert helped out so much because I could hardly move myself around in bed or anything, was so sore… (getting better now)
The following day after the baby doc checked her out, they told us that she had lost 12 oz and it was hospital policy that if a baby has lost %10 of their birth weight or more that they had to give formula if the baby was breastfeeding or not…so that’s what they did, we didn’t want them to have to keep her, if she was still losing weight by the following day, they would have… So now we are trying to deal with getting her off formula and on the breast, shed rather get her milk the fast and easy way…so she will hardly nurse at all… But Monday will be going to talk to our local LLL leader who also happens to work with WIC and will be getting a hospital grade pump to get my very very small milk supply up to where it needs to be to be able to keep up with what Sara needs… ( I qualify for a free pump because shes preterm-thank God because we couldn’t afford to rent one otherwise)
So anyway, didn’t mean to write a book here, just wanted to give you the short version of Saras birth…
We got home Friday (aug 5) evening and we all are doing very well…

      Congratulations!!!!

And just in case no one else told you, what you went thru is perfectly normal! I had 2 diabetic pregnancies and they were both delivered at 34 weeks, 4 days and 34 weeks, 5 days. Both lost quite a bit of weight at first, and had to be supplemented. It was hard work, but really didn't take too long to get them both back on track and back to mommy milk!

Take care of you and don't forget that you need lots and lots of water right now! Job well done! Julia

glad you got a healthy baby there and you are healthy too.

SO since you are not nursing... when will you be back to Atkins so you can watch her kids grow up as you grow old with Robert? Oh and when will you be allowed to be signing up for our exercise challenges too so you can keep up with her?
