  • Ultrasound & AFP results

First of all ITS A BOY!!!! We have a 15 month old daughter and were really expecting another girl so this was a nice surprise.

Also, the reason I know this is because I needed a level 2 Ultrasound because my AFP test came back low as an increased risk for Down's. The level 2 was fine exect for the fact that the leg and arm bones are slightly shorter than normal. The doctor didn't seem too concerned about that. It is a marker and he said it may increase my chanced but after "looking at you we probably just proved that this is your baby". I am short 5ft 2 but with a long waist and shorter legs and arms. We chose not to have the amino but of course I am worried sick about this. I am hoping it is because my doctor doesn't listen to me and I am actually a week less pregnant than what they are going by. I know timing can throw it off and the nurse said 7 days can but I can't find anything online as to how many days can throw off the test. I guess all we can do is be positive that we will have a healthy baby and deal with what comes. It is very stressful though and I wish I had chosen not to take the test.

((((((((( )))))))))) for you. Mom's to be worry about every little thing that can go wrong and folk telling you not to worry won't take that away but I liked your docs reasoning the boy is built like you.

    SO what's his name?

I found myself in the EXACT same boat. This is my first pregnancy and, even though everyone I know that has kids warned me about taking that test, I did it anyway because I wanted to do everything "by the book". Well, of course, they told me the same thing---I was at a higher risk for having a baby with Down Syndrome, had to go through genetic counseling and all that jazz. I also refused to have the amnio done and even though it's still in the back of my mind, that test is so unreliable that I wouldn't even worry about it. I'm only 5' so I can't imagine that this baby is gonna be 6'2" considering daddy's only about 5'6". I just think it's a shame that they put mothers who are already anxiety ridden through something like that. just my opinion lol

Thanks guys for your comments. My computer has crashed so I can't get online much these days. I am still worried and think about it almost everyday but I have to hope and pray for the best. We just had a very tragic death in the family of a 2 year old boy and it made me feel really bad about worrying if my baby is perfect or not. I do hope for the best and hope the baby is healthy but if not we will have to deal with it. At least we will still have our son.

As long as everyone is healthy, that's the most important thing. I work as a manager for a group home with Developmentally disabled people, including down's syndrome and after the initial worry, I just decided to leave it up to God. He's still our son no matter what and there's nothing you can do about it now....I'm sure everything is fine, down's is very rare these days especially when you don't have a family history of disabilities.....worrying about it only makes you unhealthy and we all need to stay healthy now.....

Best wishes and prayers to you both. I think they like you to worry so you worship them when baby is born perfect.

I honestly think it's a scam for more money when they scare you to death and convince you to have an amnio done.......
