Whas pregant with my first I was in ketosis constantly from exercising. When we exercise it is a natural thing for the body to produce ketones. I had an excellent Doctor then and he said that ketones are natural in pregant breastfeeding mothers as the metabolism is increased. I was concered about the whole thing but, from my experiencs and 3 perfect babies I am not so worried. I go so scared by what people said that I dropped Atkins altogether and gained 60 lbs. with 1 and 2 with the 3rd I did atkins the whole way through and had the largest of all my babies. I was monitered the entire pregnancy. I was in ketosis most of the time dispite having added carbs. My doctor told me not to worry this was normal for a pregnant women. So many have different opinions and I really think someone needs to do research. I would do atkins through my bregnancy and breast feeding. I am not a doctor and am only quoting from experience in this aspect. They do not seem to worry about the ketones unless you are high in sugar as well. At least this is what my doctor told me.
Thanks

Thank you so much for your comments on your experience but please everyone remember each person is different as is each pregnancy and it is always best to get the advise of your doctors!!Originally posted by iyamamaschkeWhas pregant with my first I was in ketosis constantly from exercising. I agree I am just stating what my doctor said if you are uncomfortable with or anything consult your doctor who will most likely give you crap unless you have a very open minded one which most are not. I am again just stating my views. All my children are extremely smart My oldest who I did atkins while breast feeding is in the Top of her class. The second I did not. The 3rd I did.
This is only my view I do not expect anyone to dive in and do anything that they do not feel is appropriat Discuss with your doctor and stay on the Maintenance form of Atkins for your preganancy. I had a great doctor who gave me the go ahead and it was not for Maintenance. I told him what I ate and he stated becaue I was so heavy it would be better if I did not gain any weight in my pregnany and told me to keep doing what I was doing so I did.
This is why I said what I said. I consulted my doctor and was monitored.

I'm currently pregnant and went directly into lifetime maintenance. I think if there is even the slightest risk of harming my child whether it be nursing or pregnancy it's too big a chance to take. I am eating responsibly now. I view it as my responsibility to eat balanced meals much as I view taking my prenatal vitamin as my responsiblity. Remember also that not all damage is evident immediately. For instance women who found themselves to have problems 30 years after mom took fertility meds. Just one example. Or you risk aggravating an undetected condition. I myself didn't know I had one kidney until I was 25. I feel better safe than sorry. My mantra to myself lately if I didn't get heavy eating brown rice and whole wheat bread. I got heavy topping it off with cake and icecream.
I understand each person is unique. I would urge people though to remember that Dr. A did discourage participation on his program while doing any of these things. Why would we pick certain parts that accomodate our needs. In other forums I hear people say "if you have a slice of bread you aren't on induction", "if you don't drink water you're not on Atkins" etc. Because simply put the plan is what it is written by Dr. A. Having said that I fail to see the logic in overlooking his warnings. I also find comparisons with tribal eating and original societies unrealistic. That is unless your lifestyle is compatible to those individuals in other aspects. I personally am not living in conditions requiring their same physical activities, environmental adaptation needs, etc. Therefore, the comparision is apples and oranges. Also I think we could toss infant mortality rates into the circle if we equate our medical needs with those of other eras/societies.

Even when I was doing maintenance there were ketones in my urine while pregnant so it is extremely hard to stay out of ketosis unless you sit on your but and do nothing all day. I was extremely active and exercised. I ate whole grain rye breads and whole grain pastas I still had Krtones in my urine dispite being at approximately 100 grams of crabs my and every other pregnant womans Metabolism is increased etc. Did you ever think that in those first moths of pregancy when you were sick and couldn't eat what do you think that does to your baby. Basically your body is starving and YES in ketosis and that is the first 3 months of pregancy when the brain spinal placenta is all forming. 50% of women have this type of thing. I would say almost all women are in ketosis at some time or another during preganancy. I did with my 3rd and lost weight in my first 3 months. For anyone who has been there you would understand what I am saying. I just think all the theories behind no ketones during pregnancy conflict with eachother. I would like some real proof. Not just someone saying something or a doctor thinking he knows I want research.
I myself would be more worried about ALCOHOL!!
Like I said again I am just stating my views and in no way am I trying to influence anyone but if I do you were thinking that way any how. I am NOT a doctor I have just had experience and a great doctor who backed me up while on Atkins during Preganancy

So basically your saying you were on lifetime maintenance while pregnant? If you had a carb level that high and included grains, etc. The implication from your first few post has led me to believe you were on Atkins in a wieght loss phase. I would imagine it has to others too. Therefore, if I did't hold my own opinion, or was conflicted and I read your posts I would take it that "oh she was doing Atkins and Dr. said okay" Clarification that you were doing lifetime maintenance phase of Atkins puts you in a different area altogether. Noone is arguing about Ketone, our bodies have all sorts of balancing functions. However, on Atkins you put those into overdrive. You pointed out Alcohol dangers, yep that should be avoided as well. However some Drs say its perfectly okay. I disagree and wouldn't risk it. There are many things that could go on this list. As for going into starvation mode during the first trimester, I've never had that problem. Although I know women do have that issue, it's not like Drs are recommending it. Plenty of things happen to us physically and although they don't kill us they aren't necessarily a pattern to emulate.

I was doing Atkins OWL I was still in ketosis at 100 carbs. Remember that everyone CCL is different and I was still in ketosis while beig pregnant at 100 grams of carbs. So I was in OWL becaus if you are in maintenance you are no longer producing ketones. Am I right in saying this. I am not trying to change your opinion. I am glad you are healthy I am just saying whay my doctor said. I don't want to start a fight.
I was in induction shortly after I had my baby and was eating 20 grams of carbs while I was breastfeeding. I did not have a drop in milk supply and my baby grew extreley fast.
I'm sorry I wasn't more specific when I wrote my post sometimes I get away with myself and I didn't specify that I was in ketosis at 100 grams of carbs WHile pregnant when I am not pregant it take 55 grams for me to be out of ketosis.
Sorry for the screw up

I also wanted to say that I think my body does better on the Atkins WOE because when I was pregnant I did have screw ups and even gave in for 1 month. SO I guess I didn't do it entire pregnany. I felt nauseated and sick when I added too much grains and such. Even when I added fruit I was sick. For the first 3 months I really ate low carb and I think that is some of the reason I did not get really sick. If I ate anything outside Akins I would puke. SO it also comes down to what you can eat to get through it.
I really hope you have an excellent pregnancy I am sooo happy for you. Babies are such a blessing I want to have another but, 3 is good for now. When you have your bundle of joy I would love to see him or her. I absolutely am bab y crazy. I'm sorry to have caused such a gerfuffle sometimes things are better left alone.
I hope you are following lifetime maintenance cause I know it's better for baby without all the extra yuck.
I am only human and I have screwed up and I have gotten right back here. Did I also mention I have Hypothyroidism so any addition of carbs is horrid for me. I can gain on 800 calories a day when my thyroid is not good. This is what happened during and after my second. I gained a whopping 80 pounds after she was born due to low thyroid. YEs, I was on Atkins No I didn't lose weight no matter how hard I tried until I got my problem fixed.
I'm sure you were thinking how could she get so huge following Atkins during pregnancy. That is why. I thought I would just clarify that. The same also happened after my 3rd. I thought it was post pardum till I dain basically 40 pounds in a matter of 2 months. It's difficult but I get by and Now I am headed towards my goal though I have a long way to go.
Good luck to you in your Pregnancy and May God Bless the little one growing inside your Womb. May it's heart beat strong and may it's life be long. Bless you Baby Bles you Mommy.

I would just like to say that when I was pregnant with my son I ate like I was pregnant for 4. I gained about 60 lbs. I also had morning sickness the 1st 4 months. When I got pregnant with my daughter I did not want to do this again because I never lost all the weight from my son. The Dr. told me to go on a diabetics diet which is very low carb. I followed the carbohydrates addict book. They allow one carb food each day as long as you eat the same amount of protein &veggie at the same time. I only gained 23 pounds with her and lost every one of them immediately. I never had morning sickness either. I also had the energy to do hair 40 hrs a week. I did have ketones in my urine at my dr. visits and they never mentioned it being harmful at all. My daughter is almost 5 now and almost as big as my 7 yr old and super smart. I nursed her also. Here she is

She is very beautiful and I agree with you. I did the same and my 3rd was the best pregnancy and I gained the least amount of weight I also had ketones in my urine at every visit and my doc told me it was natural.

I can't really go by weight gain on this issue because I varied so much with all of my pregnancies. If you are overweight to begin with you typically will gain less. Such was the case with me and I ate the same during the 3 prior pregnancies I took to full term. My oldest son I gained 50lbs, middle about 50 and youngest only 14lbs the entire pregnancy. Currently, I am eating lifetime maintanence and have gained 6lbs and am in my early second trimester. I think the most important thing is staying healthy in a way that works best for you.
