Re: Effects of LC on lactating mother and nursing infant

I work with breastfeeding moms everyday and I find this an interesting debate. I don't encoruage the induction process while nursing a small infant (less than 1 year) Not b/c of ketosis per say - but b/c of the detox issues. However I don't struggle with low carb in a higher range (like upper OWL and beyond). I find that moms are actually dedicated to eating healthier and have ample supply. i myself have breastfed 3 children. I nursed my first to 15months. i started atkins when she was 11months and became pregnant right away for the second time (this time twins) I ate a VERY high protien diet (176grams perday) and was limited to 1 fruit, veggies, and maybe 1 serving of whole grain per day. But honestly the protien was such a focus i rarely had room for much else. There is a lot of reasearch on the Brewer's diet as well as studies done with high protein diets and carrying healtheir babies to term (Barbara Luke and Elizabeth Noble) they believe that high protien and low carb and eliminating refined sugars and junk increase odds of carrying babies to term, avoiding preterm labor, decrease gestational diabetes, high BP, and avoiding pre-e. Avoiding intense ketosis is essential during pregnancy and IMO lactation b/c of toxins. Your body's liver has to work harder to process and eliminate. from a personal standpoint. i had HUGE drops in supply with traditional "dieting" while nursing. On a low carb WOE'ing I am never hungry, my supply has been solid, my babies gain/ed well, and they are rarely ill. I am still nursing my twins at 22months and for anyone wondering how my high protein/low carb pregnancy turned out I had 39 week twins 7'6oz and 7'4oz and a very healthy pregnancy with no issues. I KNOW nutrition played a huge role in bodies ability to perform.

Wow, this is a great thread. Maybe brought up more questions than it answered . . . but really gave me a lot to think about.
