    Baby is here!
    October 11, 2007 @ 9:35am by c-section
    7lbs 8oz 19 1/2 inches

So now Im needing a refresher of info please ladies. If I'm breastfeeding (theres no boobie and baby smiley lol) should I be having more carbs than I did on Maintenance before? I was eating around 50-60 carbs ok on Maint about a year and a half ago. But now that Im breastfeeding do u think I should up that a little bit? I don't wanna chance the baby not getting enough of anything, or running down my body either. Any suggestions to what the other BF moms are eating would be helpful. Thanks!

        Hey girl!

Congratulations! Believe it or not, our babies were born on the same day....Trinity was born vaginally at 12:47 PM Oct 11th. Glad to see you back at it. Good luck w/ the little one and take care....is this your first? Sorry I can't really be any help with your question about BF. My little one breastfed once immediately after birth and decided she liked the bottle better!

Congrats on your adorable new baby! Soooo sweet!

I'm sure lots of mums will be in with advice for you, but my thinking is that if you're eating enough to maintain your weight on maintenance... and the baby thrives, then you're eating right. Just keep your diet varied.

Happy times to you and Enviana!

Re: Baby is here! Breastfeeding and carbs question

You probably will have to up it a little bit. I am going to be breastfeeding, God willing, and I was told by the doctor and a lact. consultant that most women have problems breast feeding/keeping milk supply is because they mistakenly start cutting carb and calories after birth for weight loss or whatever reason. They said in order for me to keep a good supply of milk I needed to keep up the same guidleines of the pregnancy diet. Meaning, I have to maintain eating 300 more calories than prepregnancy to keep my milk supply up, which they recommend you do to keep healthy during pregnancy. Hope that helps!

Re: Baby is here! Breastfeeding and carbs question

I had my baby in mid May and wasn't able to lower my carbs until about 2 months after I had her. After that I had established my milk supply and was able to do induction comfortably without having my milk diminish and my baby is thriving and has been gaining weight normally. Since then I've been back on induction several times and my milk is never affected.

Since BF can be such a trying time, I suggest you focus all of your energies on that and leave the carbs to after you are both comfortable with it.

                    Thanks everyone!
I think I will take Meena's advice and wait til she's a couple months old then start. I want to make sure Enviana's health is priority, Im just so afraid if I dont start right away I'll go off the deep end! But I have to control myself, cuz that wouldnt be healthy for her either. It'd be so much easier if I just bottle fed her, but I'm selfish and I don't wanna lose that bonding/close time with her that I got with my 1st daughter. So that's the give and take of it I guess, I can't lose the weight for awhile, but oh well. Thanks everyone! I love my baby! lol so corny...

Re: Baby is here! Breastfeeding and carbs question

I am with Meena. I tried to cut back a bit on carbs/calories when my daughter was first born and my milk production dropped. When I started to eat more it increased... so I guess it is different for everyone. Once my milk supply was established though I was able to cut back slowly.

I did do a clean induction, and let me say that was the only time I had EVER really felt sick on Atkins. I mean I was throwing up all the time, really really bad induction flu. I had to up my carb intake to more than 20. Same acceptable foods, just more of them. I was worried about my milk changing and the baby not wanting to drink it, but she had no issues adjusting. Matter of fact she was having constipation issues, and once I went back to Atkins, she did much better. She refuses to now drink the milk I stored away from when she was first born , she is now 5 months old.

I have since lost 37 lbs (I'm sure some due to breast feeding itself). Slowly but surely, don't loose it quickly, don't be in a hurry. Besides... think of this, your skin is stretched from the baby, I know mine is still shrinking back even after 5 months, so even if you loose the weight, if you are like me your skin is still adjusting. Take your time, I'd say maint phase when your milk supply adjusts.

I'm a BF mom (daughter is 6 weeks) and I was going to ask this same question. My plan is to go back to the induction phase/exercise (while CLOSELY monitoring my milk supply and daughter's reaction) and then move forward.

CoolBlackChic- Im so with ya on that! Im determined to be a **** for a loooong time! lol And I too LOVE that outfit and I WILL wear it again lol.
And here's my update right now: In the beginning of November, right after I turned 30- aghhh- I decided to do induction but with way more carbs, I was averaging around 50 carbs a day. Well the baby had some issues. Of course I dont KNOW what from exactly, its always a guessing game. She started spitting up ALOT. Like every other feeding, sometimes whole mouthfuls. The pedi said watch what I was eating, no spicy etc. Which I wasn't doing anyway (not my 1st bf baby). BUT, I also had resumed my synthroid for my hypothyroid the same week. So I had hit her with a double whammy but as far as my Dr had said the synthroid wouldn't affect her. Well, at one point she was on formula for 24 hours- I was so upset I cried with every bottle! Sounds dumb I know, but Im sure u guys understand when u BF its so special and to know YOU could be making ur baby sick and u cant have that bond is HARD. Well the formula made her WORSE. Gas, spitting up... So I said screw it and started nursing again. Well I had stopped Atkins altogether and stopped my synthroid. Did some research online and seems like mixed info, some saying synthroid WONT affect baby, some say it will. So I restarted Atkins 2wks later...baby was fine. Normal spit up once in awhile. So after about 2 more wks, started synthroid again. Within 48 hrs- symptoms back again! Stopped synthroid, she's fine. So I decided to do a straight induction 2 wks b4 xmas. I went from around 200 to 192 by xmas eve. I ate bad food on xmas, went up to 201!! I couldn't believe it- one day killed me. But I went right back on. And as of right now Im 187, and back in almost every pair of my pre-preg jeans! My milk is fine, its actually more than enough. Baby is healthy and is turning into a little chubba! lol Im a little bigger on top than I was around this weight b4 baby(was 180), but Im also a 40F in the boobies right now lol. I set my goal to be back at 150 by Mothers Day. We'll see what happens but when Im determined, Im DETERMINED. No one can even believe Im back to my pre preg clothes so fast. With my first it took me 2 years til I found this board!(luv u guys).
Sorry this is so long! I like to talk and give specifics lol. But anyways, when I thought about the diet, I kinda looked at it like this- some people are vegetarians, some ppl dont eat vegetables or bread, or potatoes or rice or pasta. In our everyday world, some ppl that are not on any kind of weight loss do not eat carbs cuz they dont like those foods. They dont even realize its low carb eating. And when they BF, they just eat what they like, and they're babies r healthy. So I decided for myself based on that, I was going to try induction, and see how it went. And so far, baby turned 3 months yesterday, and all is well. Theres no ketones in baby's urine or my breastmilk- yes I checked both lol. What the heck, who cares lol. And her pedi said the only time it would cause an issue is if baby went into ketosis, but that would be highly unlikely due to the fact that very little ketones would pass through my milk. So this is where Im at right now... Its a personal choice for everyone
