  • Induction While Nursing

I had my third baby on October 30th and am currently nursing her with plans to ween her at 6 months. Should I be consuming more than 20 carbs a day during induction? If so, how many to keep up my milk supply?
    Thanks!

Uh you should only be doing the maintenance portion of the atkins diet while pregnant or nursing. Check with your doctor and double check the book. But congrats with the new baby and three cheers for you for breast feeding. I just think that while you are nursing you should not be concerned with dieting.

LOL thats easier said than done- After you've had a baby you want that weight OFF! You can safely lose weight while nursing, just make sure your being smart about it- Yes Dr. ATkins recc'mends that you only do pre to maint levels while nursing...I have seen many frineds do this and just by eliminating the junk and concentraing their diets on lots of vegies, fruits and lots of good proteins-Keep your water consumption HIGH....Your 6 month is coming up soon.... I for one want to THANK YOU for BF your baby!!! Its good for YOU its GREAT for baby and it great for the world!! Yeah YOU!!!!

Oh I'm being critical at all I hope you don't think that. I gained 60 lbs with my pregnancies and I wanted to diet and the doctor specifically told me not to diet while I'm nursing. Something about the way fat breaks down produces something that is harmful to the baby when its transfered into the milk. I really am not sure that why I said to check with the Dr. 'Cause I sure am not one!! LOL

Is there a reason why you plan on weaning at 6 months?

I'm currently nursing my 6mo and losing weight on atkins. You can lose weight and still nurse.

You certainly can...its just Dr. A recco'd that nursing Moms not participate in induction levels while nursing But I agree you can nurse and do Mait' levels and still lose

Well, this summer I'll be back to work, so that's why - but I might be able to stretch it out to 8 months (I hope). Could you tell me what sort of plan you're following to still lose weight while nursing? It would help me a lot! Thanks in advance!!!

                        Re: Induction While Nursing

I'm doing what's not recommended, LOL. I'm doing induction. It works for me and as long as my milk supply isn't compromised I'll continue to do it.

I look at it this way. It's healthier for me to lose weight than it is to keep it.

                            Re: Induction While Nursing

Do a search, there's several threads here about this. Or I can give you some links if you'd rather.

I have researched this quite a lot and SHOULD have gone on induction a year ago and lost my extra weight when I had only 25 lbs to lose, now with a GAIN of less than 2 pounds each month I have another 20 to lose. From what I found, there is no scientific reasoning behind "no induction while nursing". There was a university study being done on breastfeeding moms who were in ketosis and their babies. I wish I would have signed up and done that to help dispell the myths. Other info pointed out that nursing babies are already on a naturally ketonic diet.

Rumors talk about the toxins the body is getting rid of. I couldn't find anything scientific to back up that or reasons not to bf. It is fine for diabetic moms to bf, so why not if we're in induction? I highly recommend researching for yourself. Don't just take my word on it.

I do know that if I had gotten back into my Atkins lifestyle it would have helped me immensely with the depression I've been fighting this past year, which in turn would help our whole family. It's a vicious cycle, the problems of not being on Atkins and having problems getting back on it. I'm finally getting there (I think). Starting induction and still nursing at 14 mo. btw - months 6-7 were the hardest for me for nursing, after that I seemed to have no problems with producing enough milk. Went to a doc in Dec and he completely approved of my going on Atkins.

Yeah my milk supply is a little sluggish right now but since I am pumping too I am hoping it'll kick things back into gear soon, otherwise until then DS is getting baby food too. He loves it anyways so I don't mind. Better than formula IMHO.
