  • Atkins and Pre/Conception

I'm starting to consider trying for a baby...after a late TOM I was kinda sad when it arrived, I think it's time!

Anyway, is there anything I should avoid, be aware of, eat more of, etc..while trying to conceive? Any info would be helpful- is it dangerous to be at induction levels while trying to conceive?

As of now I'm pretty far up the ladder....I take in about 60-70 carbs a day and do my best to make it veggies, berries, and healthy dairy, but I do eat a lot of meat of all kinds.

Did anyone have any problems getting pregnant while on this WOE?

Thanks to anyone who has any advice!

    Re: Atkins and Pre/Conception

It should help not hinder. A 60-70 carb load with fresh fruits and LOTS of dark green leafy veggies and LOTS of high quality protien is what all my midwives (I ahve had three) and many whom I know, reccomend. (I'm very involved in the birthing community). You're basically doing the Brewer's Diet and that's a good thing. I began that way of eating prioir to my first child. There is a wonderful book called: Taking Charge of your Fertility. It will teach you to read your body and not a calendar. That way you will have a better recognition of when your estrogen levels are peaking and you will be able to pint point ovulation to 2-3 days each month. I used it to concieve both my pregnancies and both were "one timers". I have also watched several women struggling with infertility (as labeled by their docs) read and learn this awareness and get PG within 3-4 months. Yes, of course it could be coincidence...but when you've been trying for over a year...many people are also jsut not "reading" things acurately. You might check it out and way to go with the dieting. You dont want to be in stright ketosis when concieving...there is too much detox going on!

best wishes for a posstive ++++ and a healthy pregnancy

Erika thanks a bunch!! This is very encouraging....I may have to get a copy of that book ;-) We'll see what happens in the next couple months, I don't mind if it takes a few cycles....I wanted to be pregnant after October, but the fever is around and I am getting anxious- hee hee!!

        Re: Atkins and Pre/Conception

I second the Taking Charge of Your Fertility, it really helped me understand how my cycles work and what to look for to clue me in that I was ovulating. We were very blessed to get pregnant our first month, and I attribute most of that to the tips I read in the book (and luck, of course!).

I wasn't on Atkins while pregnant so I can't help with that. I would probably see your doctor for a preconception check up and run your diet plans by him/her. They might also take a blood test to make sure you're up to date on all your vaccines, I think one or two of them have to be given before you get pregnant so it's good to test beforehand. Take your prenatal vitamins, and try not to feel too much pressure. I know lots of gals who got pregnant when they just relaxed and enjoyed themselves. Lots of luck to you, our baby is 3 months old now and she's an absolute joy!

          Re: Atkins and Pre/Conception

Hi. I got pregnant over 5 years ago while doing atkins. Didn't research much on the maintenance phase and quit cold turkey and gained 60 lbs during my pregnancy. I have a friend that had the exact same situation. I think being in the process of losing weight helps conception...I don't know why.....but I think it does.

I am currently on extended induction. My husband and I are considering trying for a second child in the spring. I plan on going through all the rungs before hitting maintenance. Best of luck to you.

I am in a very similar stage as Colleen13 - I got pregnant while on LM - went off plan and gained 50 lbs. I lost about 30 lbs in the first year and breastfed until she was 2 and half so, so couldn't really do induction again until recently.

I and am trying to lose some weight before conceiving again - but hope to be pg in the next few months.

              Re: Atkins and Pre/Conception

I hit maintenance, 2 or 3 weeks into my pregnancy in \|February 2007, and stayed there for the duration... only gained 15lbs the whole pregnancy, and lost 57 after I had baby-- w/ no breast feeding! It honestly can be done, you just can't get into that "I'm eating for 2" mind frame! A baby's stomach is no where near the size of ours, therefore there is no excuse for eating twice as much food. I made sure I got plenty of exercise, and drank plenty of water. I kept up with my carbs, and even allowed myself some of the things I was craving...but in strict moderation! Research the phase, then go for it!

              Good luck

                Hey Ladies

I got pregnant thanks to atkins induction phase as I have hormone imbalance PCOS which really responds well to atkins diet.

I was lucky to get pregnant first month also due to atkins + toni welscher taking charge of your fertility

What most people who are not diabetic don't realize is that when you are eating Atkins WOE you level out your insulin levels which if they are too erratic causes you not to conceive. Getting your levels under control helps those with PCOS and also loosing weight can help trigger your hormones causing you to ovulate. Being on Metaformin is also good as it helps level out those insulin numbers as well.
