  • Hives!

For the first time in my life I have gotten hives. What in the world is it with this pregnancy?!!!! I have red blotches all over and talk about itching! I'm taking Benadryl and using cortizone cream to help. I just can't believe how my body is reacting to this pregnancy!

      Dawn,

I'm not pregnant (wrong gender) but I've got hives and itching like you wouldn't believe. It seems to ok during the day when I'm active, but it gets worse at night. I started doing low carb in january and this itching started about a month ago. I'm about to throw in the towel on the diet to see if that's what's causing my itching. Let me know if you find any relief. Tom

Tom my are gone. I used Benadryl and hydrocortisone cream and they were gone with no flair ups. I know it isn't a reaction to low carb since I have lost 95 pounds over the last year following Atkins, and since I found out I was pregnant I have upped my carb intake to 80 carbs per day so I'm not as "low carb" anymore! LOL

Here's something I found that may help you.

Standard initial treatment of chronic hives (urticaria) is with antihistamines. There are many different types of antihistamines. Some may work better than others in different people. Nonsedating antihistamines may not provide as much relief as sedating antihistamines. For best results, a doctor may recommend a combination of both — nonsedating during the day and sedating at night. In more severe cases, a doctor may prescribe corticosteroids. Unfortunately, no treatment provides complete relief from chronic hives.

Hives are raised, red and often itchy welts (wheals) of various sizes that appear and disappear on the skin. Chronic hives are those that last longer than six weeks — sometimes for months to years at a time. They're more common in young adults but can occur in people of any age. In most cases, the cause of chronic hives can't be identified. They're usually not associated with known exposure to anything, such as to a drug, food or chemical.

See your doctor if you have chronic hives. Your doctor may want to rule out an underlying cause for the hives, such as sinus infection, urinary tract infection or fungal infection. Some conditions, such as lupus, may cause a skin reaction that looks like hives but isn't.

Your doctor may refer you to a dermatologist or allergist for further evaluation.
Hives is a skin rash that can cause the skin to be red and have itchy bumps. Learn possible reasons to have rashes and treatments.
Finally, my Nanny would get hives whenever she was extremely nervous or stressed out!

          gald you ar better.

When I got my soy allergy I had hives, jiont sweeling and itching going on for months and ewas on roids and 2 different antihistamin both type 1 and type II before they figured out it was soy in my meds and even then it took over 6 months to clear it all up as my doc explained that my immune system had identifed the soy proteins as forgnein andbound them up in a protein histime coumpound sequestered in my cells and every time one of those cell memebranes got damaged it was released into my blood and my body reacted ugh! Every time I got warm or sweated i broke out and my doc said they are temp sensitive too and ro jump in a cold shower to assist in cantrolling the break out. just laying on the exam table caused my backside from my heels up to my head to breakout while I was in the ER getting IV roids and meds. Evrything on the front gor better but new stuff broke out on the back!

Check your foods and supplements that are new to you since you started Atkins and see if their is an ingredient that wasn't plentiful in your old way of eating or even in it at all then eliminate them from your diet and see if your condition gets better.

Also old fish can produce compounds that are histamine like so see if you have added a lot of fish too and get rid of it.

The other hivey thing on low carb is yeast die off.

          Hope you find releif soon.

          Happy low carbing

Dawn, Thanks for the reply. I may have to make a trip to the doctor. I'm pretty sure my itching is low carb related. I may have candida...and the lack of carbs/sugar is causing a die-off....who knows. I've considered taking benedryl but I hate feeling sleepy and lethargic. It seems that the itch isn't too bad until evenings. Thanks again, S-C-P
