  • New and pregnant - need some major advice

Hello everyone. I have been told this is a wonderful site and I am happy to join you! Here is my background:

I am 5 months pregnant and was on strict induction prior to conceiving. I lost 60 pounds on induction and had to stop when I found out (end of July) and have been eating freely since.

I was 248 when I found out I was 4 weeks pregnant. I went down to 240 due to being sick one week. Once I started having an appetitie again I gained that back and I am now 252. All in all, I have gained 4 pounds since I was 4 weeks. However, my Dr. sees it though I gained 12 because they are counting the 8 pounds I lost during week 5. naturally my first visit was at week 5 so I weighed in at 240.

I am so discouraged by this. I hear horror stories of babies with problems (macrosomia - too large) and mothers with preeclampsia or gestational diabetes that are my weight and more. I asked my OB to refer me to a dietician but unless I HAVE one of those issues my insurance doesn't cover. I am in tears over this - i don;t want to get either of those issues and I know a proper diet can help prohibit. I want a healthy baby and I don't know what to do. Is there anyone out there with experience of controlled carbs while pregnant? I never even made it up any rungs to even know how to do maintenance.

Google the Brewer's Pregnancy Diet and FOLLOW IT! It's pretty much identical to Adtkins Maintance. You can do this. I was 200 lbs when I concieved twins. I carried them full term - normal size babies and I was the picture of good health. Don't give in and don't eat the crap sugar and carbs. You'll be better off for it and so will your baby. and if your doc isn't supportive of you find a new one. If you are healthy and without complication look into finding a midwife. You will get much more assistance with nutrition. I had my first baby with a MW and when we found out it was twins I began interviewing OB's (no mw's in my state would catch twins) anyways, not ONE, not a single one of the doc's had any nutritional reccomendations for me. EVERY MW I spoke with -even if she couldn't take me, gave me further ideas, resources, and readings! Please, don't give up. It can be OK and you CAN have a healthy birth.

In adition to loosing over 103lbs on Atkins I am a birth doula a lactation professional and a placenta encapsulist. If you have any questions - I'd be happy to help!

heya Hope, i just wanted to say that while my 2 children are now 8 and 4 i recall similar things that u are going though .....i was big around a size 18 AU when i fell with my son who is now 8 durning the natural progression of pregnancy i was tested for gestation diabetes and turned up nothing i gave birth to a healthy baby boy 7 lb 13.5 oz

i ate freely on both my pregnancies by the time i fell with my daughter my weight was 253 Lbs same as it is now was tested twice for gestational diabetes as first test came back abnormal much to my surprise they got it wrong and i was fine My daugher who is now 4 was born 6lbs 6 oz

i understand that b4 pregnancy u were trying to reach a goal weight but honestly based on my expirence ppl are so willing to tell u the horror stories take them with a proverbial grain of salt . My adive basied on my expirence is eat what u want by all means keep healthy but deal with the weight gain after your bubs is born

personally i would think a quack would be more conserned with weight loss during pregnancy it is natural to gain weight during pregnancy is natural your body want u to gain weight
