  • iodine?

I'm currently on the search for an endocrinologist who will take me seriously -- 2 so far will only run the standard tests, and then pronounce me within "normal".

That's actually back story -- the current situation: I've been REALLY cold, with the weather turning cold now especially. A friend of mine told me her doctor told her to take iodine when she felt cold. So she carries a little vial around with her, and just takes a little on a day when she is feeling particularly cold.

So I went to the health food store and purchased some kelp: the capsules have 660 mg kelp providing 390 mcg iron, 20 mg sodium, and 400 mcg iodine.

I have not felt this good since I can't even remember when! I have energy to clean my house, I am sitting in my 75 degree heated house and feeling WARM (comfy warm) and NOT COLD at all. My hands aren't freezing! My FEET -- my poor feet are not cold!! It's wonderful!!!!

So -- has anyone else experienced anything like this? I feel so good, I'm not gloomy. It's amazing.

The kelp bottle says "Not recommended for ... long-term use." I don't know what that means. I searched the NIH website, and found that for iodine, the maximum daily intake can be up to 2 mg (milligrams, not micrograms) but only for 3 weeks. So I wonder if I will have to stop taking this, and go back to feeling like crap?

I don't know how to ascertain whether an endocrinologist will be a good fit for me, before I spend the $$ on the appointment.

    Any advice?

Any experiences with kelp and/or iodine?

Could be me. I'll try your kelp idea, too, thanks.

      Re: iodine?

well if you are deficient in iodine up take one of the needed materials for production of thyroid hormone then adding iodine to your diet will assist you in making thyroid hormone. However too much iodine consumed will cause the WolffChaikoff effect
to occur and you will be in worse trouble cause you just shut off thyroid hormone production. Excess iodine can also cause you to develope hyperthyroidism or Graves disease.

Please be careful with your supplementing and check with your doc tfor the right amount for you.

If you have your test results from your previous visit to your doc check your TSH level ans see if it is 3 or below. in 2002 the endocrin society changed the threshold level from 5 to 3 for folk with symptoms of hypothyroidism. They are referred to as subclinical cases. Also ask what your free T4 levels were. Estrogen effects thyroid hormone availibility to the cells because it alters proteins in the blood stram to act as bonding sites for the T4 so you will show large amounts of T4 but not free T4 if that is a problem for you.
There are other reasons you feel cold one has to do with the hormones that regulate temp in the body and the negative effect weight loss has oin their production.

2big4mysize, thanks so much! I've been a little worried about that amount of iodine, so I am only taking it every other day. But DARN it makes me feel good! But now I am even more motivated to find a doctor ASAP, per the information you posted.

        Thanks!!

Can I jump in here. I'm confused. Can you take iodine if you are taking thyroid meds?
I have non-Hashis hypo thyroidsim and have been avoiding iodine in case it messes with my levels.

I'd appreciate some advice on this one.

iodine is a nessasary compound for the production of thyroid hormones. when you have any thyroid condition you need to be conssitant in the level of any thyroid effecting compound you consume be it your meds, goitrogen foods, female hormones whatever. your doctor will titrate your med level based on what is in your blood stream during the weeks they are testing you.

Be consistant with what is normal for your life and your doc wiull adjust your meds to fit your lifestyle.

            Happy low carbing.
