I was taking my Synthroid (I have the generic version) in the morning when I woke up but for a while now when I wake up if I don't eat right away I feel sick to my stomache. I know on the bottle it says to take it on am empty stomache or 2-3 hours after a meal. Does anyone in here take it with their food? For a while I was taking it with my breakfast and when I got my levels checked they were perfect so I guess my question is, can I take it with food?

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
Can't you take it before you go to bed?

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
no, we can't Brook cause it revs up our thyroid which makes sleep difficult.
Kimberly your meds were titrated with you consuming them with food so noiw when you take them with out the food you are getting a bigger dose in your body. Since taking them alone makes you feel ill talk with your doc about continuing to swallow them with your meal. You will need to keep the food and vits you have at your pill taking meal consistant so you get the same interferance with the thyroid pill absorption but you should be fine.
Changing the time or way you take a titrated dose of meds will need a visit to your doc for a new tritration of the dose.by the book atkinseer

See? Learn something new every day!
What a drag though
I have to take the majority of pills at night. Almost all of them upset my stomach.

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
Alrighty thankyou for clearing that up because I was a little confused. I had always wonder why I had to take it on an empty stomache. I am currently not taking any vitamins, I have a Women's One A Day but that has Iron in it so I'm just curious what I can have.

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
I have been on thyroid meds for several years - from Synthroid to various generic brands. I was concerned about taking my medication and right after that each morning having my 2 cups of coffee (although I usually don't eat breakfast for an hour or so after that). I have found it difficult to work in my morning coffee, eating breakfast, taking my meds appropriately, AND trying to get to a gym for a water workout all before 7 AM!). I am a junior high teacher and have to be at school for "yard guard" (outside duty)
by 7:15 several days a week. So to get all that in AND take my thyroid med an hour before I do anything else, would have necessitated my getting up at 4:30! I can't get to bed by 9:30 in the evening to get in at least 7 hours of quality sleep - too much other stuff going on in my family sometimes!
When I asked my doc about it, he said that if my thyroid lab numbers are in the acceptable range (and they are, and have been for several years), not to worry about it. It's working, so I don't have to "fix" it by doing something different.
So I just take it when I get up about 5:30, have those coupla cups of java, get to the gym (on virtuous days
), and eat a quick breakfast in the car on the way to school - hard-boiled eggs with some veggie finger foods, or an Atkins bar, or cheese cubes. And my thyroid values have been good for several years.
But whoever said on here that you have to work out what works best for you, is right. And hopefully you have an informed doctor who will work with you and not pass down decrees from on high (you know, the ones who think that M.D. means "Medical Deity")
Good luck, and be healthy!sigpicIt's never too late to be what you might have been!

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
Thanks for the advice
I don't think I'm going to worry that much about taking it with my breakfast or at what time. I was obsessing over it when I first started taking it and I've been on it for 7 years now. I would set the alarm clock for 6 AM, take it and go abck to bed, then I when I would wake up I knew it had been over an hour so I was all good. I wish they would come out with a pill you only had to take once a month it would be so much easier!

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
I also take my Synthroid first thing in the morning but I also drink my morning decaf tea or coffee with it as well. NO problem by doing that either. After 30 minutes or so, I eat my usual breakfast. Works for me. I've tried it by taking it at night 2 hours before bedtime on an empty stomach and I've found that by taking it in the morning, I have more energy!

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
as long as you are consitant with your medication from day one and your dose is titrated by your doc to allow for any food interferance it doesn't matter. it just means you could be taking a higher dose then you would if you didn't.by the book atkinseer

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
I keep my Synthroid on my nightstand and usually wake up a few hours before I actually get up...so I take my pill....and go back to sleep. By the time I get up it's safe to eat. Taking your pill with food can inhibit the absorption. I believe that info is on the insert that comes with your prescription.

Re: Question About Time To Take Medicine??
I was born without a thyroid and have been taking thyroid meds all my life. I used to use synthroid, but the i switched to a natural pig thyroid called armour thyroid. It works great, and i am alert and awake. I take mine in at night. Does anyone else on here not have a thyroid?? I've never ran into anyone that doenst have one.
