  • Help!

    Hi all,

    Just wanted to check in.

    I've had a major hypothyroid attack these last few weeks and my body seems to be fighting back as I get my meds stabilised again. All this more or less coincided with starting Atkins and I'm struggling. I'm down a few pounds but have stalled and the scale has been creeping back up again.

    I know it will get easier as I begin to feel better but it's a long and frustrating process. I don't want to give up though as I know I need to eat low carb for my health and losing the weight I have gained since I've ben ill would boost my energy and self-confidence. And I'm loving this board. What a find!

      Felix, I'm hypothyroid too. Its quite a struggle. But I'm happy to say that this has been the only diet I've been able to lose on consistently since being diagnosed 3 years ago. So keep ya head up, you'll get through it. Keep taking those meds!!!

        Thanks Babyphat for the words of encouragement.

        Did you find that you couldn't lose weight if your meds were out of whack? It feels like my body is holding onto everything for dear life.

        As long as I know it is possible to lose weight, Ill keep trying but at the moment it seems like an up hill struggle that I'm not winning.

        You lookk fab by the way!

          Sorry its taken me so long to get back to this! Since the board went down, I lost track of alot of topics.

          But yes, if my meds were off, forget losing weight altogether! My meds had to be upped 3 times over the last year and a half. So keep getting your levels checked like your supposed to. Also, there's alot of foods you should be avoiding too, that most doctors don't even bother to mention. Some of them are cabbage and brussel sprouts. If you do a google search on foods to avoid with hypothyroid, you'll find some lists. If you can't find em, PM me, I'll hook ya up!

            hey how you doing Felix sorry i missed your earlier post. we have many hypo folk on the board I have Hasimoto's and got out of whack summer 2003 and had a 12 week 6 day stall so I know what you mean about it flairing up. Watxh your food choices and try to keep your amount of those goitrogens you pick form the tkins acceptabke food list constant so you can keep your thyroid levels constant. the neat thing about haveing your meds adjusted while you are doing your Atkins is your doc is currently compensating for those veggie you are including in your foods.

            When i was normal range my Atkins was working so well my doc kept saying we need to test your levels I think they are too high. And very time they came back normal for me.

              Thanks everyone for your words of support.

              It's all very up and down at the moment still. But at least I'm going in the right direction overall! I had some tests done and needed an adjustment and am feeling better already.

              I'm please to say that I've lost 6 pounds so far! I'm stuck at the moment (up two, down two, repeat ten times!). But considering that my body has at lot to deal with at the moment with the med adjustments, I am quite pleased! It's very hard when you are feeling lousy and low in energy but I'm not letting myself comfort eat and managing to get out for walks most days.

              I hoping this mini-stall will resolve itself soon! More fat perhaps?? I'm only averaging about 55% at the moment for some reason I can't fathom. I'm definitely not avoiding it but I don't like butter, mayonnaise or oil very much and have never used them.

                Felix I'm glad to hear you've lost some pounds!
                TRY to up your fat anyway you can. The more fat I eat, the more I lose on this diet. Try more fatty ground beef, or steaks. What do you use to fry your food in? How about salad dressings? All those things will add up. :nod Keep us updated!!

                  if y9ou only have 55% fats then you got too much stuff being converted to sugar going on right now. that is the premaintnenace level of fat.

                  go for 65% and you should see your stall bust loose.

                  remember as I'm sure your doc told you every cell in your body needs T3 for metabolism and when it is low you are running slow in every part so you get less enzyme production which means less of the reactions those enzymes are used for happen and it just snow balls from there. I'm sure he even told you how low thyriod is often mistaken for depression cause those brain chemicals are effected too. When you get it right for you and remember al long as you are having symptoms it isn't right for you even if it is in the "range" of normal. you might need it at the lower end of the range.

                    Thanks both of you,

                    Wow, I'm overwhelmed at the knowledge and support here. :hug

                    I'm working at getting my thyroid levels slightly higher but as you know, this can't be rushed. But I am making progress at long last and am starting to feel some energy coming back. One thing I have noticed, is that I've not been sleeping as well since I started this WOE. I think that isn't helping. Did anyone else get this?

                    I'm going to try eating more fat. I have already started eating beef mince for the first time in years and cream cheese but I am going to struggle with dressings and butter. I have never liked them. I thought pork rinds would have helped but I'm still not eating enough fat even with them.

                    Off to eat some lard!

                        I'm on thyroxine and Armour - 125 mcg and 2.5 grains. Its quite a high dose but I seem to need it.

                        These are the things you need to avoid or limit (I don't think most people have to give them up entirely)

                        Avoid unless cooked thouroughly:

                        * African cassava
                        * Asparagus
                        * babassu (a palm-tree coconut fruit popular in Brazil and Africa)
                        * Broccoli
                        * brussels sprouts
                        * Cabbage
                        * Cauliflower
                        * horseradish
                        * kale
                        * kohlrabi
                        * leafy green vegetables (turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens)
                        * Legumes (beans and peas)
                        * peanuts
                        * pine nuts
                        * Processed meats
                        * radishes
                        * rutabaga
                        * Spinach
                        * turnips
                        * Watercress

                        Avoid entirely:

                        * Soy in any form that isn't fermented
                        * millet (actually WORSE when cooked)
                        * Rapeseed, canola, flax, soybean, safflower, corn and other polyunsaturated fats/oils

                        Leaves a lot to eat (NOT).

                        Hope this helps,

                          Thanks for posting that Felix.

                          I take Synthroid 100 mcg.

                          And Ztachick, don't feel bad, I found that list the day AFTER I finished the Cabbage Soup Diet!! Figures! No wonder I gained a pound...stupidest diet ever. :anger

                          Most people can have some of those foods every once in awhile. But as a general rule, its best to avoid them. But if you have some broccoli one night, you're not gonna throw your thyroid off. Its just not the best veggie you could have eaten. And don't eat another no-no thing the next day, and so on. Why doctors don't give us more info on this is beyond me. They just medicate and send you on your way...

                            actually if your doc is up todate you can have as much of those foods as you like as long as you keep the amounts you have consistant. Yep they have changed their mind and now it is standard to adjust your meds to your lifestyle and if eating and enjoying those foods is a life style you enjoy and plan to continue then you need to talk to your doc about adjusting your meds to accomadate them. I got my meds when i started my Atkins so mine are titrated for me eating those foods from the goitrigen lists that I enjoy. Now if you car going to eat raw goitrogen veggies for a wek every meal and then none ofr a week there isn't any way to accomadate that but if you plan to have them say 5 servings a week then go for it but talk with your doc.

                            Oh and there hasn't been any studies done that confirm that cooking destroys the effect so proceed at your own risk there.

                              Hello

                              I just found out this morning that I have hypothyroidism. :sadblinky

                              I was feeling fatigued and I've had backaches for the past couple months.

                              Does everyone have problems losing weight with this? I've lost almost 30 lbs since starting in July and I thought that was pretty good. My weight loss has averaged 1.35 lbs a month. Could it have been better had I not had hypothyroidism?

                              All the information on this thread has been helpful. I am picking up my Synthroid today and will start taking it tonight.

                              I eat a lot of vegetables on that list since starting this WOE including the flax, which I eat everyday. Should I stop this??

                              Thanks everyone!
