    Hi everyone,
I haven't been to this board in a while and now I find all of these new forums, how great!

My question is this: I have been eating A LOT of cooked brussel sprouts, zucchini, green beans and salad greens. Is it true that cooking certain vegetables renders their affect on the thyroid benign?

I just want to male sure I don't mess myself up.

    thanks in advance!

no diffineative studies have been done to prove that fact. it is believed that the enzyme in them is the cause and is destroyed in cooking but without any studies it is antedotal.

The key is to keep the level of those and the other foods like canola oil, soy, and nuts cosistant in your diet and your medication titrated for that level. then you can enjoy them and still have your normal thyroid range

      Great reply, Thanks.
I could never find any real info on this question, now I understand that it's anecdotal. I may retest my thyroid soon just to see if all these veggies are
      causing my numbers to change.

I agree with 2big4mysize. I still will occasionally have raw broccoli or cauliflower. I'm not a turnip or rutabaga person, but I love peanut butter and eat that regularly, and it has never really adversely affected my thyroid tests, so I continue to enjoy it.

darsha I think you misunderstood what I was saying. you ask if cooking stopped the effect and there is no studies done that show cooking stops the interference. Those foods definitely interfer with the conversion of T4 to T3 and that is why hypothyroid folk need to keep the level of them they eat consistant. Don't go wild having cabbage every meal for a week and then not eat any of them for a week.

Yeah I did misinterpret what you said.
I do exactly what you said not to do. I'll feast on greens for a couple of days and then cut way back by having hardly any veggies.
Thanks for clearing it up. I'll try to be more consistent.

              Jenn11

Jenn11 I see that you eat peanut butter. Is it just regular pb? I like it too, but I'm afraid to continue eating it because I'm just going to start taking T3T4 combo and I don't want to mess it up. ensive

you can eat anything you want to but you have to be consistant in your eating. you don't get a new med and stop eating the foods unless you plan not to eat them again. As long as you keep the foods consistant your doctor will adjust your dose to fit your lifestyle noot Jenn11's or mine but yours and your foods. you eat the foods and you need a bigger dose of the medication you don't eat them and you need a lower dose of the medication but you can't just jump around and medicate yourself cause it has a delayed action because the levels in our bodies are in a negative feed back loop.

I'm going later this week to have a thyroid test to see if I'm hypo. My question is this........I have some organic virgin coconut oil that I just purchased. I've been reading that it helps boost the metabolism. If I start using it now, will it in any way affect my thyroid results this Friday?
