    Re: Armour better than synthroid??

I just found this info on another board:

Re: Does T4 medication affect T3 levels?
most of the time our bodies convert t4 into t3...thereby affecting your levels of t3 when you take the synthroid, however, many people cannot convert the t4 into t3 so they might directly supplement with t3. That is my case....my t4 levels are fine with Synthroid but my t3 was way low so I take a compounded time released t3.

P.P.S. I drink bottled SPRING water, or water from the grocery store that is run through that reverse osmosis machine. That removes all fluoride. Regular bottled water is just purified tap water and has fluoride. Spring water does not. I love Ice Mountain spring water, plus they use 30% less plastic and no dye.

      Let me just say...... http://nutrimeds.com/

My husband, daughter (27 years old) and I have been taking Armour Thyroid for around 3 months now. Doing just great. I think it has helped with weight, mental fog and other assorted health issues. I've had 3 different Thyroid tests (so has my daughter and husband) through the years and they all come back negative. But the symptoms have always been there.

Since taking Armour Thyroid (PORCINE THYROID), we've all three had great results. We like it because it is a natural Thyroid supplement taken from pig Thyroid - which we've researched and found that it most naturally resembles our own ( human) Thyroid. It is NOT synthetic.

        Re: Armour better than synthroid??

When I was working for my doctor, we were allowed to test with what they call a "thyroid panel". It included all Thyroid hormones. NOW, the insurance companies have made it so that test no longer exsists. You can't just check "tyroid panel" anymore. THe reason is that the insurance companies wanted to cut down on doctors just ording a tyroid panel when a simple tsh test would do. So, the labs make it so you have to check T3 and T4 separately from TSH. Doctors were actually getting chastised for ordering those tests unless "medically necessary" and if it wasn't proven that it was, the money for the test would be taken out of any checks we got from them. SO, guess who decides what is medically necessary? THE INSURANCE COMPANIES..I'm only saying this because people may not know this. The doctor's sometimes have their hands tied with testing. I was so spoiled though. My doctor would've done any test I wanted and would've drawn my blood in between patients and I would sent my own stuff to the lab and call to get my own results! Okay, enough of that.

I don't know what the problem is/was..I was gaining and losing the same 2 lbs for weeks then all the sudden I dropped 6 lbs this past week. My medicine would've started to really work around this same time. I've been on it for 8 weeks..what I am concerned about is that my hair is now falling out and it wasn't before, my skin is dry..the mental fog got worse..so, I don't know. I just wanted to know if anyone else had had the same experience I have had. Thanks for the suggests..I am now armed with some info to take back to my doctor.

          Re: Armour better than synthroid??

I took Synthroid for about 18 years of my life then got switched to Armour thyroid. My mom was reading an article in the womens world magazine and told me I should asked my doctor about it, I did and they switched me, I have been on it ever since and think that it works great

              Re: Armour better than synthroid??

After 25+ years on Synthroid and then 2 years on Armour....I feel worlds better on Armour!
I feel very sad when I think of all the time I wasted feeling lousy on Synthroid.
I still get tears in my eyes when I think about it.
Thats why I spend time telling other people about it...I don't want othes to waste time feeling lousy.
It makes that much of a difference!

How did you get your doctor to change you? I just saw my doctor today..he says my numbers are fine..but,I feel Lousy..My TSH is within range..but, still between 3-4..I was told to have my T3 checked too but, I forgot when Iwas in there to mention it..anyway, he did run more thyroid tests to check my numbers..so, I guess I'll have to wait and see..He keeps saying I am under stress

                  Re: Armour better than synthroid??

I just insisted, I told my doctor I wanted to try it to see if I felt better. Remember, even though he's a doctor, you are still the "customer" You are paying him. You are not asking for something that will hurt you.

                    Re: Armour better than synthroid??

Okay..will try that..I know..I worked for a doctor for 10 years..I just remember that those were the patients that he hated..hahaha..I think even though I have knowledge about things I am worried to put my foot down because I remember how it was..now I am on the other side..SO, my other question is this..Is there special directions about how to use it? Like doesn't it need to be refrigerated AND did your insurance cover it?

                      Re: Armour better than synthroid??

My doctor didn't like it either, but I'm so glad I did it. No there are no special directions, it doesn't have to be refridgerated and yes my insurance covers it. Even if your ins. does not cover it, it is relatively inexpensive, it would cost me apx. 20 dollars a month w/o ins.
                      Good luck!!

                        Re: Armour better than synthroid??

Your TSH may be in 'normal range' but it is NOT optimal!
Optimal TSH is a LOW number, around 1.0 or at least below 2.0

The higher your TSH, the lower your actual thyroid hormoes are (usually).

Increasing your meds would decrease your TSH (because it would increase your FREE T4).

Did you get a copy of your lab reports?
                        What else did they test?
Post those test results & we will try to help you.

If your doctor doesn't know that optimal TSH is lower than yours, I suggest that you find a better doctor. Many doctors don't adequately treat hypothyroidism.

Plus, the med you are on is a T4 only med, you need to have your FREE T3 tested and into the optimal range too.

Check out stop the thyroid madness dot com & learn about why Synthroid can be so lousy & why it leaves so many people feeling lousy (even after the dose is high enough to get an optimal TSH).

YOUR dose of Synthroid (or whatever T4 med you are on) is not even high enough to get your TSH down to an optimal level. The 'normal range' is outdated, but the labs and most doctors still use it. Most endocrinologist now know that optimal TSH is around 1.0
The problem with endocrinologist is that many of them still don't treat low FREE T3 levels.

Please don't settle for such a high TSH. Its not just your wt that will suffer, it can easily affect your overall health & your quality of life!!
