  • No Thyroid

Hi, I'm new to this forum and was amazed how many people have thyroid troubles. I was diagnosed with Grave's Desease 10 years ago and had to have a total Thyrodectomy. Since then I have a constant struggle with my weight. I'm taking replacement hormones but my metabolism is very slow.
I've been on Induction now for six weeks and lost 7 pounds (without cheating). I exercise 3 times a week for an hour. Does anyone have problems like me? Maybe somebody knows what else i can do to get my metabolism going.
    Thank you

Has your medicatin level been checked since you started Atkins. many folk with thyroid disorders have a change in dosage need when dieting since the body attempts to slow down and many of the induction friendly veggies favorites are goitrogens.

Are you taking just aT4 or do you also Have a T3/T4 combo medication?

This is not necessarily true for everyone who is hypothyroid, however, it is speculated that a person who is hypothyroid or on thyroid meds should preferably not go below 30 grams of carbohydrate per day - simply because they do not at lower carb levels convert enough T4 into T3, the component that drives the metabolism. YMMV I still think 7 lbs in 6 weeks is wonderful. I'd be thrilled if I could do that!

There was quite a bit of discussion on this on lowcarbfriends board. Ummm, I think it might have been by an Atkins Nutritionals dietitian or it was nonstickpam (her name on there) who mentioned it. People differ a LOT in opinions on this though. This applies to some hypothryoid folks and not to others, so it really is a YMMV thing. I wish I could see a study too. Right now it is just hearsay. Sorry I can't be any more help.
