  • Stay with Atkins or try The Thyroid Diet

I really don't know what to do. Has anyone tried The Thyroid Diet?

Atkins doesn't seem to work for me. Only 5lbs in 7 weeks. The problem seems to be I can't eat enough. I just feel nauseas most of the time and I can't force myself to eat enough!
I had my bloods done recently, TSH 0.68 (my first since starting Levo), that looks good to me so I can't see why I'm holding on to this weight.

    Hi Trac,

I have not tried that diet. Is it the Mary J Shoman one? I got the impression it was about a range of approaches?

Maybe if the nuasea could be addressed you'd eat more? How much do you eat now?

Your TSH looks good, so thyroid isn't the first place I would look if I were you.

Try posting typical menus in the forum for reviewing menus to see if anyone spots a problem there. Give info such as your age, gender and what exercise you do, if any.

It's possible some tweaking of the menus and exercise routine could step things up a little. I'm not a fast loser, but I'm not sure that is bad when I hear of people who lose very fast and have hunks of hair falling out. Generally, changing the menus and exercise will help me break a stall.

Additionally, if you are just starting treatment for underactive thyroid, give yourself some time to let your body adjust to the increased hormone and start converting T4 to T3 well.

For me, since I had been so long undiagnosed, it took over a year to get the level correct and then over another year to heal and adjust. If you are younger and diagnosed more readily, it won't take that long, but your body still may need some time.

Hi Trac, Maybe you are either not on enough or there may be a conversion problem. How do you feel, are you cold, tired and feeling generally yuk? Or do you feel a bit sweaty and shaky, maybe palpitations?

For me, I found that the only diet that actually works for me is the Atkins. I tried something similar but didn't stick with it, now have 1/2 stone on. I do feel that people with Thyroid problems have a tough time actually breaking down carbohydrates like we used to before we had to go onto medication.

It's up to you in the long run, but if I were you i'd stick. 5lbs is better than nothing. I know people who go on diets with thyroid probs and can't lose anything at all.

            Hopefully, just hopefully

Is the Thyroid Diet short term or a way of eating for life?

With thyroid problems, you're probably going to lose slowly no matter what.

What you decide is up to you!

TSh doesn't measure quat about your thyroid hormones. it tells you how your pituatary is reacting. I'd get a full thyroid panel as my first option and see if my T3 and Free T4 were in the correct areas of the lab range.

if you were hypo for a long time untreated you may also have adrenial fatigue and will need that treated too.
