Does anyone else have hyperthyroid and take meds (which slows weight loss). I fall in this category. Just curious to see what type of results others have had on Atkins w/this condition.
I was on them back in the good old days (20+ years). I eventually got my thyroid irradiated (Graves Disease) and within a couple of years I was hypo. It is strange being on the anti-thyroid drugs, because you get used to eating whatever you want and still losing. That helps you form some very bad habits. So it is good you are low carbing to keep your weight under control, before it gets too far out of hand (like I did.)

Thanks for the input. Sadly, my weight is already out of control. I never really started having the symptoms of graves disease, but a thyroid uptake scan reflected that I did have it. So, still considering my options on how to proceed. I'm supposed to be taking a med every day, 3x a day. But I'm just not very good at remembering. I'm thinking of a more permanent aspect. We'll see I suppose. Thanks again for your help! :wave
I have been diagnosed with an hyperactive thryroid. I take 2 tapazole 5mg pills a day. I had a thyroid scan, and ultrasound. I have my levels checked every 4 weeks. I am not sure if that medication slows down weight loss. This is my second round on Atkins and have not lost as fast as the first time. I was on the meds the first time also but not as long or as high a dose. I will ask my endriconologist at my next visist the end of May what Atkins does to the Thyroid, what affect the meds play and are there foods that don't do well with someone that has thyroid issues and let you know.

This is my second round on atkins and I am also finding that it does not go as quickly the second time. My bro's girlfriend says the same thing and she has no thyroid problems. She is on her second time and is not losing as fast, if at all.
I am hypo thyroid and I just got my yearly thyroid test back. I am in normal range so I should not be having a problem but I am having a heck of a time losing weight this time around. I work out everyday and stick pretty close to the diet, I don't do as much fat as I did the first time but I thinking that would not matter.
I am beginning to wonder if this diet is only good the first time around. I lost 70 pds and kept it off for 7 years before my thyroid gave out and I gained it all back in about 2 years.
the amount of fat in the diet is critical on Atkins as we use dietary fats to keep the body burning fats and not switching back and forth from a glucose burn to a fat burn everytime we eat.
Keep following your Atkins per the rules in DANDR do your exercise, drink your water take your suppklements and remember to only eat enough food to satisfy your hunger at the time you are eating and you will be a loser.
Kim,
I am eating the fat and still not losing. I go this Thursday to the endriconologist for my Thyroid check and I am going to run it by her and see what she says. I drink the water, stick to the diet, exercise and have not lost more than 5 pounds since March. I have lost inches, but I want to see that scale move!! Don't throw in the towel, I will see what comes of the DR. visit and let you know. I eat fat, mayo, butter, oil, so I am just listening to everyone tell me it will happen..

Sarah, I have Graves disease and used to take Neo-Mercazole, along with beta blocker. That made me pick up about 40 pounds. I had a partial thyroidectomy, and then the weight really piled on no matter what I did. It's under control now, and my thyroid is normal without meds. If your thyroid is completely out of control and hyper, you stand the risk to develop heart problems which is sooooo not worth it. Have it checked and get it under control. If you think about what you stand to loose if you don't take the meds, you'll soon start remembering to do so. I felt wonderful eating everything I saw, and still lost weight when I was hyper. But the feeling of being on edge and your heart beating at 160 - 190 bpm resting, I don't miss that one little bit. And the trembling, o my goodness, I felt like an old woman. I've been on Atkins for a month now, and take CLA ( Conjugated Linoleic Acid ). Talk to your doctor about taking it along with your meds to control weight. Atkins has done wonders for me so far, and I know it will for you too. Hope I could help..
