  • Take control of your thyroid !

Hi Everyone,I have been hypothyroid for 20 years now. Also adrenal insufficiency. I know that Armour thyroid is desicated pigs thyroid and it is the closest thing to a human beings. It contains about 6 different hormones. I couldn't convert T4 so I am on T3 now and have been for a number of years. I did try Armour and still do occassionally but after a couple of days the T4 builds up again and makes me a bit jittery, but I would rather be on that if I could. I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid after being soooo ill, and I just knew something was wrong. After many months my GP did bloods and told me the results. Great I thought I actually have an answer to my problems, only to discover that the T4 was making me worse. I started having horrific anxiety which ended in collapse. This kept on happening until I was told about a private GP in Surrey England. I phoned him up and just to hear his words were like a message sent from heaven. You are suffering from T4-T3 conversion problems and low adrenal reserve. Come and see me I'll do some tests and we'll put you right. I went the tests were done and I started on Deltacortril (Adrenal support) and after week I was to try to take the T3. The adrenals had to recover enough to help the thyroid work and to transport the hormones around the body. Eventually I think it took about 10 days I took my first T3 and it worked. I also have been advised that blood tests are not always what the doctor should go on. Imagine a ruler, your thyroid hormones have gone down the ruler and dropped off the end..... bloods show hypothyroidism ! You start on thyroid hormones and it brings you back onto the ruler. It may bring you back to 1 - 2 or 3 inches , but you may have started off life with 10 or 11 inches. So even though the blood tests show that you are no longer hypothyroid YOU ACTUALLY ARE !! We are all individual some need more some need less. Do the Barnes Basal temperature test as shown in The Atkins book. If you are below normal you need more! I have as much as I feel I need. I soon know if I need to drop the dosage due to feeling hot and heart races a bit. If I feel tired and weak and overall grotty I up them a bit.
Do the test! Sorry to go on a bit but i started running a thyroid helpline along with the private GP and so many people are suffering even though they are on treatment.

    Best Wishes Elaine xxxxxxxxxxx

    Hi Elaine,

Thanks so much for the info. I will do the test at some stage (prob new year as routine is out of whack until then). I have been hypo for 10 years. I have generally tried not to think too much about the thyroid as whenever I have read about it I feel like my GP would be unresponsive. I have had some annoying comments over the years. Interesting that a private GP could help you. As far as I know in the UK the NHS only treats the T4 - is that right?

I'd like to address this - although I have lost some weight I am still not the same person as 10 years ago. I have mood and depression problems that I think it exaggerates.

Hi Alexa, Hope that you are feeling ok today. I think that there is a book in the US written by Dr Broda Barnes. It would be worth you getting it I think, and this person was the my Private G.P's inspiration. Or you could get my Private G.P's book "The great Thyroid Scandal & how to survive it", by Dr Barry Durrant Peatfield. It's good as it gives you all of the information in laymans terms. I could lend you mine if you like?, but it's out on loan at the moment !! Just let me know and I can send it to you when I get it back. Yes, our NHS doctors tend to give just T4, thank god I met Barry. When my NHS doctor put me on T4 I ended up in the local psychiatric hospital for a couple of nights !! Probably would have been there for a lot longer if my family hadn't got me out. All due to T4 - T3 conversion making me so anxious causing collapse. It is so scary how many people are going through stuff like that, all due to thyroid ? I could go on for hours but I will try and restrain myself ! Look up Dr Barry Durrant peatfield on the computer there's a lot of info on there.
      God Bless & Take Care

Hi Alexa, I hope that you are well? I have been doing this diet for 11 days now. I thought that it was great when I started but I haven't lost another pound since the first week. I lost 6 in the first week so I'm feeling a bit disheartened at the moment (even though I do feel better !). I have been excercising quite a lot too and I think that I've burnt myself out. One of the downfalls of low adrenals I guess. Anyway I know that in a couple of days I'll bounce back again. How are you feeling? Where abouts in the US are you and whats the weather like there? Guess what it's doing here?!!!! LOL
Anyway lovely to hear from you

              Hi Elaine,

I'm good thanks Don't sweat not losing in the second week - that is really common. I've had it that way, 6lbs first week and then nothing. It'll happen.

Don't overdo the exercise! I'm not as well informed about thyroid or adrenals as you are but I feel I need to listen for burnout and it comes quicker for me than for others I think.

I am in the UK So weather is rubbish as ever!

Tickers from: www.tickerfactory.com have fun choosing!

Hi again, glad that you are ok. I don't know why i thought that you were in the US !? I went to my NHS GP today and she was so pleased that i was on this diet! I couldn't believe it. You know what the usual NHS doctors remarks would be. I don't know why she would know so much about it, she's got legs like a whippet !!! But she's lovely. I know that I've got Barry (the private GP) for support, but he's in Surrey and it's quite a long way for me to travel. So I am really pleased that she is there too.
I am feeling a lot better today. Ive been recharging my batteries. Hope that you have a good day tomorrow

Re: Take control of your thyroid !

My husband is in the Air Force.. we were stationed in the UK for 3 years from '99-'02 and I'm awaiting medical clearance so we can go back for another 4 years! Hopefully we'll be back in Jolly Olde England by the first of March. I, too, suffer from thyroid problems. It's amazing how many doctors are ignorant about Armour Thyroid.
