  • Thyroid issues and leg cramps

I was diagnoised hypothyroid and I have been having leg cramps for a while, but lately they have gotten worse.
I have read when researching this that leg cramps could be a symptom of hypothyroid.
I asked my doctor and he attributed it to diabetes but I am not convinced at this point I have full blown diabetes, I think I am on the cusp but I was wondering if anyone else has had experience with leg cramps and hypo thyroid ??
I am not taking any meds yet because I had bad results but plan to get into the specialist as soon as I can but in the mean time these cramps can be occasionally really painful.
    Thanks !!

Re: Thyroid issues and leg cramps

Are they the kind that are on your calves?

I thought I might have read that cramps could be a side-effect of induction, but I'm not positive on that.

In any case, Stephie, I'm really sorry you are having to endure them! *hugs*

You are right, you can get them on Atkins, but I have been having these since before starting the eating and I had even asked the doc back at the end of March before we even got blood work back and he just said, oh, that is the diabetes. I have never once read that in diabetes symptoms, but have read it recently in thyroid symptoms. One woke me out of a deep sleep the other morning and it was pretty bad too !!
Thanks for the sympathy and hugs, though, that was nice of you !! I really hope we can figure out why and get rid of them, I HATE the stupid things !!

I know. If they are the calf ones, those are so painful! I sure hope you can figure out what they are coming from. Not as easy as just eating a banana like you hear people saying, since we're on atkins. *hugs*

How much water are you drinking?

Yep, they are the calf ones and they are really bad. Usually at night but today just walking around I have felt some too.Or the potentiol of one hitting but hasn't yet if that makes sense.
I drink three to four liters thorugh out the day, plus some diet rite with a lot of ice in it, but even when my water is down, I still get them. I take potassium, calcium, magnesium , zinc seperately as well as vit D and C and some other suppliments like flax seen and grapeseed and a multi that does not have potasium in it. I have worried it might the water, but what can I do if it is ??
            Thanks,
            Stephie

Re: Thyroid issues and leg cramps

              hiya,

I have hypothyroidism- which went unnoticed for ages and I suffered terrible with cramps in my legs and all across my back unusually. I know what you mean about feeling like you are about to have a cramp.

Perhaps ask the doc to rec-check bloods?

Once I get the list of doctors from the insurance I will make an appt with a specialist and get to the bottom of this. I am glad I am not crazy and that others have experienced it too !!
Thanks for letting me know, that helps a lot !! I am glad someone understands the about to cramp thing too, lol !!

Re: Thyroid issues and leg cramps

I had them too before I got medicated correctly for my hypothyroid.
one thing atkins induction can do is dehydrate us and flush electrolytes so be sure to keep an eye on your potassium calcium and magnesium levels too cause if you have electrolyte cramps more water or more thyroid meds will not fix those and viseversa

Re: Thyroid issues and leg cramps

I have been making sure to take those all in suppliment every night. After years of Atkins I remember how important that is, but I am glad you said something for others who are learning .That is such an important fact to know about Atkins you cannot repeat it enough !!
