  • Weight loss complication

Evening all, and please bear with me as I`m a newbie!

Approx. 6 years I was tested for Hypothyroidism due to my presenting symptoms. Blood investigation showed my levels fell within `normal range` but as I was so symptomatic I had my peroxidase level (thyroid antibodies) done which was`abnormal` and I was therefore commenced Levothyroxine. I have annual blood tests and have been on a stable dose now for the past few years but have found losing the rapidly gained weight a real problem. That is until starting Atkins. I have got on so well with this and am having really successful weight loss .
I now have a problem! My bloods show I had gone into Hyperthroid range, my dose was reduced by 25 mcg per day & I have just had my bloods repeated after 8 weeks at my reduced dose to find the results still as bad! I have just had a further reduction of 25 mcg per day with a planned repeat blood test in 8 weeks.
During this period the main problem I`ve had has been the affect on my eyes which I am treating with eye drops for the dryness and am hoping the oedema around them is subsiding as the problem burns itself out. They are definitely improving.

I suppose what I`m wanting to know is has anyone else has had this problem with weight loss affecting their levels and how did the process eventually work out?

    Thanks for your replies

No that is interesting. I going in for a test very soon but last year I was good and I had been one year on Atkins then. Good meaning stable. I am still Hypo and using the same dose of Levothyrozine. My dose is 50 mcg.

      Thanks for your reply Liv.

I gradually ended up on a dose of 175 mcg, which I now understand to be quite a high dose, but was stable on this for several years. My annual bloods were always fine, and I had no untoward symptoms.

My Thyroxine dose was reduced to 150 mcg initially and, after repeat bloods 8 weeks later, was reduced further to 125 mcg.

I Will have to see how my bloods look in 8 weeks, but it seems there`s still scope to maybe increase my carbs.further and/or reduce my Thyroxine dose to balance things.
