  • Anyone elese have Pernicious Anemia

I hope I spelled that right, I am still reveling from the doctors phone call but it does explain a lot with me and how I have been feeling. I would like to know if anyone elese here has it and if it has affected Atkins in any way or how they feel now after treatment. I had my first shot on Friday and I have too ahve another on Moday but, to tell you the truth the shot on Friday really perked me up. My doc said that my b12 level was low but not too bad so we caught it early but I have antiboties I am still researching to make sence of what is happening to my body so any information is greatly needed adn appreciated.

Re: Anyone elese have Pernicious Anemia

I saw your old post on here regarding pernicious anemia. I also have this disorder. It runs in my family. I have been on the B-12 injections for about 6 years now. The thing that I notice the most now is that I don't bruise so easily since my B-12 is now normal.

For you to absorbe B-12 from your food in your stomach, you have to have something called "intrinsic factor" secreted in your stomach for you to be able to absorb that B-12. With pernicious anemia, you are lacking that intrinsic factor so you can take all the B-12 you want and it will go right through your system and you absorb absolutely none from food. Therefore, your B-12 shows up as being low. Technically, you have to have a Schillings Test which involves a 24 hr urine collection after some sort of capsule before it is officially called Pernicious Anemia but most doctors will diagnose it with a low B-12. Anyway, you have to take monthly injections for the rest of your life. It's cheaper if you learn to give them to yourself. BTW, I also have hypothyroidism.
