  • Ingredients in Dieter's Formula #3 not in my multivitamin

Hi, I'm researching some ingredients that are in the Dieter's Formula but not in my multivitamin/ or is less dosage. I really like my multivitamin and it is actually better than the #3 formula in almost every single area. I've included them below. Please help me decide if I should take a supplement of these ingredients in addition to my multivitamin.

*One of the ingredients missing in my multivitamin is panthethine is specifically mentioned in the book. “Pantethine is the intermediary between the B vitamin panththenic acid and the important coenzyme A. It plays a pivotal role in may metabolic pathways and is a remarkable cholestol-control nutrient. It is valuable in allergy, colitiis and stress, and in yeast infections.” Recommended dosage is 100-400 mg daisly. I couldn’t find much information on pantethine in the forums so I googled and found this:

    PANTETHINE (CO-ENZYME B5)

Pantethine is the stable structure of Pantetheine, which is the biologially active form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5.) It is the precursor to co-enzyme A (CoA.) Co-enzyme A plays a central role in the production of energy in your cells via a biochemical pathway called the Krebs' cycle. This involves the production of energy from fats & carbohydrates. Pantothenic acid is also essential for adrenal gland function.

Chemicals known as acetaldehydes accumulate in your body from alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, chronic candida infections & vehicle exhaust fumes. The aldehydes inhibit co-enzyme A & thus decrease energy production. Chronic aldehyde exposure also contributes to heart disease & has damaging effects on brain function. Acetaldehyde also impairs the red blood cells delivery of oxygen to your body's cells. It also induces a deficiency of vitamin B1, B3, & pyridoxal-5-phosphate. Pantethine has been found to help decrease aldehyde levels.

    Pantethine is useful for:
    • Decreasing cholesterol & triglycerides.
    • Increasing HDL, thus creating a more favorable Chol/HDL ratio which is the atherogenic index of your body.
    • Reducing cardiovascular risk by inhibiting platelet clumping & the production of the inflammation producing chemical, thromboxane A2.
    • Protecting against some of the damaging effects of aldehydes from smoking, drinking alcohol, or chronic yeast infections.
    • Helping with the symptoms of formaldehyde exposure in chemically sensitive individuals.
    • Improving energy.
    SYMPTOMS OF DEFICIENCY ARE:
    • Depression
    • Fatigue
    • Weakness/faintness
    • Allergies
    • Adrenal insufficiency
    • Low blood pressure
    • Hypoglycemia
    • Insomnia
    • Nervousness
    • Rapid heart rate
    • Restlessness
    • Sullenness
    • Quarrelsomeness
    • Arthritis
    • Muscle cramps
    • Sore or burning feet
    • Infection susceptibility with frequent respiratory illness
    • Poor wound healing
    • Eczema
    • Hair loss
    • Digestive disorders
    • Diarrhea
    • Constipation
    • Nausea/vomiting
    • Abdominal pain
    • Duodenal ulcers
    • Impaired coordination
    • Kidney disorders
*Atkins offers a Pantethine supplement. It is $28.00 though!!
*Found a medical study where pantethine was found to aid in a fatty liver.

Re: Ingredients in Dieter's Formula #3 not in my multivitamin

Here are the other ingredients no listed in my multivitamin but found in the Atkins Diet Formula #3 and information about them. I am also posting this information in the supplement forum and I couldn’t find anything about these supplements over there.
    • Is pyrodoxal-5 phosphate the same as B6? If so, my multivitamin has this.I did find this information on it: “P5P is an active form of vitamin B6. Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P) is the coenzyme for all enzymes involved in the conversion process for amino acids. P5P is also needed for hemoglobin production as well as for fatty acid and prostaglandin metabolism.* In addition, P5P is necessary for neurotransmitter production, specifically for the production of dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, GABA and glutamate”. This supplement can be bought to take by itself.
    • I looked online regarding choline, an ingredient that my multivitamin has 50 mg less of than the one in the Dieter’s Forula. It is estimated that the average person consumes from food 500 mg a day. Choline is available in foods such as: liver, cauliflower, soybeans, spinach, lettuce, nuts, and eggs Orally ingested choline may cause a fishy odor so I AM NOT INTERESTED IN A CHOLINE SUPPLEMENT. Do you think that is ok?
    • Inosotol, ingredient my multivitamin has 30 less than the dieter’s formula: Inositol plays an important part in the health of cell membranes especially the specialized cells in the brain, bone marrow, eyes and intestines. The function of the cell membranes is to regulate the contents of the cells, which makes effective functioning possible. Inositol is said to promote healthy hair, hair growth, and helps in controlling estrogen levels and may assist in preventing breast lumps. It may also be of benefit in reducing blood cholesterol levels. NOTE: Coffee kills this nutrient. Inositol is available from wheat germ, brewers yeast. bananas, liver, brown rice, oat flakes, nuts, unrefined molasses, raisins and vegetables (stuff we can’t have so this vitamin might be useful). Inisotol has also been found to decrease depression and OCD. According to recent research, the abundance of Inositol in fiber may explain in part why high fiber diets are often associated with a lower incidence of certain cancers.
    • PABA: (Missing in my multivitamin): PABA is used to improve the protein used in the body, it relates to red blood cell formation as well as assisting the manufacture of folic acid in the intestines. When PABA is in short supply fatigue, irritability, nervousness and depression might manifest itself as well as constipation. Weeping eczema has also been noted in people with PABA deficiency as well as patchy areas on the skin. Interestingly, people who have gone gray may experience a return of their natural hair color by taking PABA, but only if they are deficient in B vitamins.
    • Citrus Bioflavanoids (missing in my multivitamin but part of dieter’s formula): Citrus Bioflavonoids are natural substances found in plants, fruits, vegetables, nuts, bark, and buckwheat. Citrus Bioflavonoids help protect capillaries, prevent bruising, and intensify the effect of vitamin C in the body. In fact, Bioflavonoids are essential for total vitamin C effectiveness. Citrus Bioflavonoids provide natural antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergy properties. In addition, certain bioflavonoids are beneficial for fighting infections, free radical damage, viruses, and common colds. Bioflavonoids have also been used to help alleviate symptoms related to allergies and respiratory conditions. Citrus Bioflavonoids are sometimes considered vitamins because they possess the properties of a vitamin, and are sometimes referred to as vitamin P. They are found in several forms, including hesperidin, eriodictyl, quercetin, and rutin. They cannot be produced by the body, and therefore have to be taken as dietary supplements. Typical sources for Bioflavonoids also include the natural substances found in the peels of citrus fruits, peppers, and black currants. Daily use of Citrus Bioflavonoids can be helpful to those suffering from bruising, varicose veins, spider veins, arthritis, hemorrhage, phlebitis, high cholesterol levels, herpes, cataracts, general inflammation, bleeding gums, blood clots, scurvy, hemorrhoids, edema, and hypertension. Price isn’t too bad-about $7.00 for 30 pills.
    • vanadyl sulfate: Vanadyl sulfate, one of the most popular bodybuilding supplements, is derived from trace mineral vanadium. Athletes have long used vanadyl sulfate to increase their performance. It is believed to play a role in helping to regulate the body's healthy blood sugar levels, similar to insulin. Studies show that vanadyl sulfate mainly helps the muscle cells uptake glucose (instead of fat cells (adipocytes) uptaking glucose). Basically, by mimicking the actions of insulin, vanadyl sulfate forces more proteins, amino acids, and carbohydrates directly into muscles. European doctors often use vanadium salts as a natural treatment for diabetes. Vanadium is a nutrient that can be toxic in doses only slightly greater than beneficial ones. Those who take more than 15 mg daily for more than 1 year risk kidney toxicity
    • octacosanol: “octacosanol had promising effects on endurance, reaction time, and other measures of exercise capacity.1 In another trial, 1,000 mcg per day of octacosanol for eight weeks was found to improve grip strength and visual reaction time, but it had no effect on chest strength, auditory reaction time, or endurance” . Found in spinach and wheat germ oil.
