  • Multivitamins with iron

    Hi everyone

Since I'm on a budget (Christmas *groan*) I had to get the cheapest vitamin supplements I could find for now, and I just realised it has iron in it.

In the book it says not to get one with iron in - does anyone know why / is it likely to stall me?

    Any help would be appreciated
    thanks

You already get a lot of iron on Atkins, and you don't want to overdo.

Iron is one of those vitamins that you absolutely don't want in excess in your body. Its down right dangerous. Since Atkins is generally high in food that contains iron, you can easily OD on the stuff. If I were you, go to Wal-Mart and spend a bit of money on a good vitamin. Centrum is highly talked about on this board. When it comes to multis you get what you pay. I have heard that some are so bad they come out just about the way they went in and mostly fillers.

          Re: Multivitamins with iron

I have the same problem here in Italy... no multivits without iron. Used to get Atkins Basic #3, but since the Atkins bankruptcy it seems to be ever so hard to get...at least in the UK, and I have to get it there as I have customs problems if I order from the States.

All such a bore! There must be some available in the UK!!! Wish I knew where, too, darn it!

Thanks Cleo and Desertthorn for the advice on the iron thing, it makes sense!

Firewoman and Sallyslimsoon, I'm planning to look at every type the Boots here has tomorrow, so will let you know if I have any joy - although I'm guessing you might have already tried there

fyi. Just so you know. Iron is one of the only minerals your body does not pass if it is not needed. It stays in your system. The only way to pass iron is through growth or blood loss. Hence, it can become a free radical in your system when too much is taken.

                  Re: Multivitamins with iron

I doubt I'll have any luck in Boots either then Firewoman, we have the teeniest Boots in the world here and no health food shops so I guess I'm out of luck until I go down South again... I'll try looking online though. Will let you know if I get anywhere.

I couldn't see any aspartame free fizzy drinks either!

Oh and thanks Bren for the info, its nice to know what I'm talking about when I'm explaining to DP

                    Re: Multivitamins with iron

Just FYI - I'm a low energy person and anemia runs in my family although I have never been anemic. Last summer I decided to try extra iron supplements without really doing any research on the risks. I finally decided to look it up and apparently the body needs very little iron and even taking an extra 25mg a day can cause iron toxicity in the blood stream which can kill you. I was taking too much, so I stopped and for 6 months after that I had a very heavy TOM (unusual for me) and it would show up every 2 weeks. So, be careful with the iron.

                      Re: Multivitamins with iron

Wow that could explain a lot, I've been having my TOM constantly for the last three weeks, I thought it was just a side affect of Depo provera (the injection pill), but I've always been fine with it before... I wonder if they are related!

                          Re: Multivitamins with iron

Funny, I had a similar thing happen when I was on the pill and it turned out that I needed a stronger dosage. First, you'll want to stop taking those multi vitamins w/ iron and see if it clears up. I do have to tell you that the first two months after I stopped taking iron was almost nonstop - even if it wasn't heavy. For another four months after it was kind of an intermittant stop and trickle thing that eventually cleared up. Unfortunately, it can take a while for the iron thing to clear up (as I said, for me it took about 6 mos.). Without waiting that long to figure out if your injection is failing or your iron is too high, you may want to go to your doctor and have the iron checked to make sure that it truly is the problem.

Thanks Jen... sure would be happy to know of any vits minus iron. Of course I buy online, cos where I am, there are absolutely NO Atkins products at all... or any low carb products for that matter. So far so good though with the WOE. Am forced to stick to fresh foods, which I love and which can't be bad. However, it does get a little trying when a kilo of carbalose flour costs five times as much because of the price of the courier!!! Way I look at it though, is that it would have been more expensive (and less effective probably) to go to a dietician.
