I recently found a bottle of potassium hanging around the medicine cabinet and wanted to start taking it for my hair loss and leg cramps, however, I noticed that it was called Potassium Gluconate and wanted to be sure this was ok. Since Atkins I've been wary of anything with 'Gluco'.

Re: Potassium Gluconate
that is fine it is the form of OTC potassium you will find. remember too much potassium is bad for theheart so be sure your potassium is low first. you can check your fitday for your amount if you use it andgo to the reports section.
Many folk use the salt subs which have potassium in them but watch out cause there is one with calcium citrate instead.Last edited by 2big4mysize; April 6, 2006, 08:41 PM.by the book atkinseer

Re: Potassium Gluconate
I'm curious - is there somethig bad about calcium chloride? Also, if mild cramping like in my calves or wrists during prolonged exertion is likely to be a mineral deficiency, or something else?~Susan

Re: Potassium Gluconate
actually that should say calcium citrate as calcium choride would burn your mouth if you used it as tabel salt.
If you are looking for potassium you don't want to be eating a calcium salt was all.
your cramps could be from electrolyte imbalance not enough fluid or even lack of fuel during the exerice. there is no correct answer without tests. you can try correcting them and seeing what happenes. electrolye imbalances are responcible for the cramps not caused during exercise like late night ones.by the book atkinseer
