  • Inulin-based fiber supplement

New stuff on the US market.

According to the label, FiberSure is 100% inulin. 1 net carb per 1 ounce. I bought a jar of it (on sale and with a coupon). It's a fine white powder and slightly sweet (not surprized by the natural sweetness). It does dissolve completely in liquids.

Yeah, I read about that property of inulin too.

I'll probably experiment with this stuff and see if I can use it in foods. I don't think it will 'gravy thicken' things, but if it adds stability to foods like meringues or those Atkins Revolution Rolls, then it would be handy to have in the kitchen.

it adds a sweet taste to stuff Megs and I think it feeds yeast in yeast based products. Have to look in the topic for the osolo rolls knock off of nullo mondo's where i posted what all the ingredients did.

If I'm not mistaken, SweetLeaf brand Stevia has inulin in it. I also recently noticed my husbands yogurt has inulin, although I can't think of the brand off the top of my head.

inulin feeds the good bacteria and is lower cal/carb them lactose added back and more friendly to the lactose intolerant folk.

The Fibersure is slightly sweet. I tasted a little plain. But when I added a teaspoon to some herbal tea, it didn't give the tea a sweet flavor. Editing to add...it has no taste when added to plain water either.

The fibersure website has recipes---but the recipes don't use the inulin for any specific cooking quality. They use it as a 'sneak-in' product, like what you would do if you had a picky eater and you wanted to sneak-in chopped vegetables.

                  Re: Inulin-based fiber supplement

I use Sweetleaf stevia plus that has inulin and I also drink Lifeway kefir which contains inulin. I am allergic and react to alot of foods but have no problems with inulin in these two products. I bought some Fibersure which is supposed to be 100% inulin and I had an allergic reaction. It also puzzles me that Stevia has no calories or carbs but that Fibersure listed that it was 25 calories per heaping teaspoon and 6g of carbs. It doesn't seem to be the same inulin because of the nutritional equivilants being different and my reactions to it. Just wondering what anyone else might think

Fibersure is pure inulin. The nutritional label makes sense because 1 gram of carb has 4 calories. There's obviously some mathematical rounding involved too.

I think stevia can list itself as "0 carbs"/"0 cals" due to the wacky labeling laws in the US and due to the amount of inulin in a serving of the product. I could be wrong, but I don't think 1 serving of the stevia contain 5 grams of inulin.
