    Re: Iron

Iron is BAD. Do NOT take it if you don't really NEED it. You get the iron enough with the low-carb food you eat. Otherwise, you can take some iron if you've had a strong blood loss or during the menses period. However, try to avoid it! And buy supplements without the iron! The end!

I suppose, maybe when I get this up and rollin I won't need to take Iron supplements cause of all the meat I will be eating. I just didn't know why it was a big deal in the Atkins Lifestyle. That's all. If I offended you, sorry.

          Re: Iron

You should be getting enough iron from the meat on the woe that is why Atkins does not recommend iron in your suppliments. And yes..it is one of those minerals that can be bad for you if you over do it, and cosmetically it can also discolour your teeth

            What? Oh, don't worry, you didn't ^^

It's just that you gain a lot of iron from the meat you eat and on Atkins you usually eat A LOT of meat! I used to take with-iron supplements before. However, I've made it clear now and bought the ones without iron.

            So, supplements=good. Iron=bad.

                Re: Iron

I just finished reading Dr. Eades' Protein Power Lifespan. He has an excellent explanation about why we shouldn't supplement with iron. I'll explain the best I can with a few quotes.

"How does the body get rid of excess iron? The short answer is that it doesn't. If we absorb more from our diets than we get rid of in our normal daily minscule losses, we begin to accumlate iron."

"A few extra milligrams here and there doesn't seem like a lot, but over a lifetime a few milligrams of excess iron per day begins to add up. The more iron we have stored, the greater potential we have for damage if that iron gets loose in the tissues. And indeed that's the case. A number of studies have shown that people with excess stored iron have more heart disease and stroke and greater rates of cancer. They also have a higher incidence of such glandular disorders as diabetes and hypothyroidism."

"...people with the Metabolic Syndrome, for reasons that remain unclear, tend to accumulate iron readily."

The book is full of fascinating information like this and of course, much more in-depth explanations about iron. I'd recommend you get it from your library and give it a look-see.

                    Re: Iron

According to Dr. Atkins' book, Vita-Nutrient Solution, the good iron is called "heme iron" and comes from natural sources such as meat, chicken, and fish. Only 2 mg of heme iron can be absorbed by the body during any single meal, so no surplus accumulates. (p130). He also sites this reference in his book: Sweeten, M.K., et al., Journal of Food Quality, 9: 263-75.

He says to avoid non-heme iron, which comes from supplements, and that "the body can absorb as much as 20 mg of non-heme iron at any one time." (p131)
