  • Oils! fish, cod liver, omega 3.6.9 help!!!

OK, so i was taking cod liver oil as a suppliment, thinking it was 'fish oil' a cod is a fish right? then when looking at the suppliments at the store i also see 'salmon oil' also a fish? instead, i figured i'd be a smarty pants and take omega 3-6-9 and get all my oils at once --so i'm not taking as big a handful of pills!!!

now i keep seeing 'fish oils' mentioned all over. should i be looking for a suppliments called 'fish oils'? are they different fish than salmon or cod?

is taking my omega 3.6.9 not the same?

    I'm so confused!!

You can take flax oil to get the same benefits as fish oil. Omega 3-6-9 is the similar to fish oil, but I believe the fish and flax oil are just Omega 3, which is the most important anyway. I've also heard it's possible to have too much of 6 and 9?

OK so the flax oil is good to know too..wonder if it's better to buy actual organic flax oil or if it's the same in capsule form? I'd imagine the oil would be better...

The liquid form is probably better, but it has a bigger chance of spoiling or going bad (as it needs to be refrigerated), whereas the capsules don't have as great a risk of going rancid or losing efficacy. The capsules are more convenient, too...my co-workers already think I'm strange enough, I can imagine the looks I'd get taking huge swigs of oil throughout my day...

Flax oil will indeed go rancid, so please be careful. The capsules are perfectly fine.

Both fish oils (whether cod or salmon or other) and flaxseed oils contain omega 3, which is what most people want for good health. However, fish oil also contains other goodies that flaxoil does not. Fish oil is usually recommended for those that have cardiovascular issues, but really, anyone can take them.

And you can definitely have too much omega 6....most people have way too much!

I can update my omega 3-6-9 thread by including a few paragraphs on fish oils. Lemme add that to my list of things to do.

flax 3's however, don't contain EPAs- only fish(and sea algea) does.
You might want to check out long chain vs short chain omega 3's before making a switch, espec. if you don't eat much fatty fish.

Very true, chicklady, but not everyone needs to take EPA. However, omega 3s are vital, especially in the age of processed foods.

I realize of bodies are capable of converting, but from what I've read, we are very inefficient at it, and would require 10 times the amount of plant based O3's to get sufficient amts.

Oh wow!!! I was previously taking the Omega 3,6,9 pill. That thing was HUGE!!

I ran out and then just got the flax capsules instead. So you all are saying that the Fish oil is better than the 3,6,9?? I have an Atkins book about the suppliments..I need to read some more I think. I have noticed, since taking the Flax pills, I am more..."regular" which was a problem for a while with me.

Flax oil capsules are perfectly fine! They are a great source of omega 3s and a lot easier on the pocketbook than fishoil.

I love Atkins' VitaNutrient book! Enjoy the reading.

If you go to www.mercola.com and search "fish oil" you'll find tons of good info. I guess Cod Liver oil is good to take in the winter when we don't get as much Vitamin D from the sun, and Flax can be taken the rest of the year. From what I've read that's the most effective way to take these EFA's.

It takes 17 3.6.9. pills to equal 1tbsp of the of 3.6.9 oil. Always take the oil if you can. I use udo's 3.6.9 and think it is much better than plain flax or fish oil. It has flax in it, but it had the right ratios of others oils so we can make the DHA that we need. Flax is omega 3 heavy and 6.9 light. Fish oil has DHA and EPA but we don't need it if we have the right ratios of omega's in our bodies (we will convert 10-36% of ALA's to DHA and EPA and will stop converting when have enough; we can OD on DHA and EPA). Without the right ratios (too much 6) our bodies can't make enough. Plus a lot of fish oil has mercury and is rancid.

EPA & DHA are both important and should be sought in a suppliment

And there's not much need for omega 6 as we get way too much from our grain-fed proteins....and omega 9 is found in olive oil, no need to add that in a supplement, either. But do get both EPA and DHA--omega 3s

Omega 6 contains GLA. GLA is a key nutrient for people with allergies. The best sources are borage or evening primrose oil. The more junk fats are in the diet (over-processed oils that never go bad) the more leukotrienes are made. Leukotrienes cause allergies similar to histamine. GLA makes leukotriene inhibitors.

DHA comes from algae and fish. There are vegetarian supplements for DHA made from algae. Given that 20% of your brain and neurological system by weight are made out of DHA, it's not an insignificant nutrient. Supplementation with DHA can prevent Alzheimers and other dementias because the DHA makes a protein that fights the formation of plaques in the brain. Many people are poor converters of EPA to DHA. I am one myself.

FTR, I take Udo's Choice 3-6-9 and fish oil in the form of cod liver oil. The health benefits of both are spectacular.

The bottled flax oil is the freshest way of using flax. It must be refrigerated and has a short "Use By" date. But the quality is superior to the capsules. The capsules are great to have at work, though, or any place where there is no refrigeration.

Norwegian fish oils have far higher standards than those manufactured in the US. The Norwegians test for levels of mercury, PCBs and other toxins at a standard that 10,000 times more demanding than the US. I personally do not buy fish oil of US origin. Nordic Naturals and Carlson's are two good brands.
