I had a good chuckle about your comment about cod liver oil.
I haven't read the article myself...it was the first thing that popped up when I did a preliminary search through my university's library system. There might be other articles or even one that shoots down this one. *shrugs* I'm personally not a big fan of the USDA, but that's a political issue that one probably shouldn't discuss here.
As far as your concern about cooked flax seeds/meal (not oil), I recall reading an article about that very fact and the conclusion was that the flax still retained most of their nutritional value when cooked at temperatures up to 350 F. When I have some extra time, I'll see if I can find that article again. At the very least, we would still be getting the fiber, if nothing else.
