bio. i swear by everything atkins friendly that when i started on the calcium w/D about 5 or 6 weeks ago (maybe longer), my body just went haywire. i feel bloated all the time, i feel headachy all the time and i just keep tracing this back to the same time i started that particular supplement.

now i know, or i think i know, that D helps the body absorb the calcium. is that right? i know, or i think i know, that too much D is bad. "toxic" is what one article said.

my multivitamin has 100% D in it. is it possible that the added D in the calcium supplement has caused some kind of reaction in me?
and if i've got 100% in one supplement there is no need to have it added with another, is there?

i've bought a calcium w/o the D and i'm going to see how i fair with that.

Well, here I am for the clean-up! Now, let's get started...

Vitamin D does help our body absorb calcium better, but so do many other minerals such as magnesium. However, just as it can help, HIGH dosages of certain nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, and fiber can NEGATIVELY affect the absorption of calcium. Other items will cause one to excrete calcium even more such as sodium, sugar, phosphates, caffeine, and alcohol.

It is very true that too much vitamin D is toxic! It causes the concentration of calcium in the blood to increase dramatically. When this happens, our bodies try to make the blood to the way it was before and tries to find ways of getting rid of the excess calcium. The extra calcium then seeps into our soft tissues and into the walls of our blood vessels. Not good!

Although I don't recall vitamin D, calcium, or the combination thereof to cause bloating and other issues of the haywire level type, it doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

Are your calcium supplements using the same type of main ingredient? Also, what sort of vitamin D is associated with your calcium? My other thoughts also ponder about the "other ingredients" that are associated with your calcium + D supplement. Perhaps a "filler" is causing you some discomfort? I would like to look into this further, if it's possible. If you can provide me with the brand(s) you're taking, I will see if I can find the ingredient list on-line and do some snooping.

See why I say a food/nutrition journal is important? I know, I'm preaching to the choir here! lolol

Please let me know if you need clarification on anything.

if i'm getting 100% of my D in the multivitamin, would it even be necessary to also have it in the calcium supplement?

        Jimmie,

If you're getting 100% vitamin D from your multivitamin, you don't need it with your calcium supplment.

I don't see anything in that ingredient list that would cause you to go haywire. I'm at a loss of what to tell you other than to switch to ones without D and see how you feel. *shrugs* Maybe MyJack can take the ones with D? I'd hate to see vitamins go to waste.

i'll stay on the ones w/o and see how it goes. if the symptoms continue, then we'll know
it's not so much the vitamins. i got so much going on with female problems that it all
might be working against each other. i'm a work in progress.

i so appreciate the help and i'll keep you posted to my progress.
