  • Vit C Question

I posted this on the diabetes board, but think maybe this is where I should have posted it. Sorry about that....
I have come across some conflicting info. regarding Vit. C and it's effect on glucose monitoring. Some suggest that Vit. C will give a false lower glucose level & some suggest it will give a false high reading. Anyone here have any personal experience with this? Anyone know if any of these vitamins/ supplements that are supposed to be good for diabetes can cause an incorrect reading on our glucose monitors? Thanks for your help.
    God Bless,
    Julie

    Re: Vit C Question

    Hi Julie!

I just wanted to let you know that it's ok to post your question here as well as the diabetics board.

As for your various questions, I just want to point out that not everyone responds to medications, supplements, and so forth in the same way...ditto with the glucose monitors (when and how they are used)...

For *me*, Vitamin C does give a false positive reading as does niacin (which is a type of vit B). A friend of mine says that her fish oil supplements cause false positives, but it doesn't for me (and I take high doses of it, too). I'll give her a call to see if she has any experience with vitamin c.

When do you take your readings? Multiple times a day or just once a day? My physician only has me testing once a day, and it's first thing in the morning.

Also, you may wish to peruse Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution book (ISBN: 0-684-81849-3). You local library may have a copy for you to borrow. In it, Dr. Atkins go through many nutrients and their properties in a down-to-earth way. Toward the back of the book, he has "recipes" of various supplements to take for various conditions. He has one titled, "Blood sugar imbalances: diabetes and hypoglycemia" and that may interest you.
