  • Looking for a dry cereal

Does Atkins make a dry cereal that is not sweetened urplequ: ? I really want it as a crunch substitute not as a breakfast. The Almond Crunch one is okay, but it is sooooooo sweet :tounge .

Gosh, I don't know. I tried a "cereal" one time and didn't care for it so never bought any more of that type product.

Hopefully someone will come along and have some suggestions for you. Have you tried looking on some of the "low carb" web sites??

Is the almond crunch one you mentioned an "Atkins" brand?? ensive

Yes it is Atkins Morning Start Crunchy Almond Crisp. They also make Blueberry Bounty and Banana Nut Harvest. I haven't tried those, but since they are a bit higher in net carbs, I figure that they are even sweeter. The Crunchy Almond is only 3 net carbs for 2/3 cup. But it is so coated with Splenda that I can't deal with it. I haven't really looked further than my local Atkins store. I was hoping that someone had already done the leg work. I'll take your suggestion and try on line. Gina

I've been eating the atkins almond cereal and Hood LC milk. pretty low carb breakfast.

You might try your health food store for something else. Kellogg All bran Extra fiber is a net carb value of 7, but nothing as low as the atkins cereals, although the almonds do lower the carb count,

Wow 1 carb? no hidden sugars? if so fantastic, and very hard to believe. Look for any "ose" in the nutritional label

At these prices we have to come up with some cereal recipes

I notice the flax seed meal cereals- great stuf- this flax seed meal- remember to keep it in the refrig/freezer or it turns rancid quick

Thanks for the heads up on that Canadian site :hug . The seem to have some good stuff, especially for when you are on a maintenance level. Their tortilla chips gave me the idea ensive to make my own out of those two low carb brands available here. I'll brush them with olive oil and salty seasonings and fry them...I'll let you know if they are edible.

Thanks for the advice on low-carb cold cereals. Breakfast is difficult for me because I hate eggs, and I hate cooking in the morning.

Also, I usually don't do well on maintenance. If it's not an all or nothing situation, I kinda flounder.

The Canadian web site sounds like it might help me through breakfast when I get on maintenance.

                Thanks again,

Mary, I know what you mean about breakfast. I think a lot of us have the problem of "tiring" of eggs. There are so many other alternatives. I make a quiche from hamburger/sausage and slice it like a pie. The recipe is on our Recipe board so check it out when you get a chance. There are also some faux pancakes and faux french toast, etc.

I also know what you mean about doing it "all the way" or "not at all". That is one reason I think this WOE works for so many people. I know it is the only "diet" I've been able to actually stick to for any length of time.

I wish you luck on getting to your goal. You sound very determined. Keep us posted on your progress.

I'm not a "breakfast" food eater, but egg salad, chicken salad, fried genoa salami, melted swiss cheese, cream cheese and smoked salmon (lox) on one of the low carb (3gm) tortillas or wraps, yum. These kind of things make a wonderful breakfast for me. I, also, try to stay close to "induction" for 4-5 days a week. Just not having to think or count makes my life much easier when I'm busy. Thank goodness that I'm so carnivorous.

I USE A CEREAL FROM WALMART, NATURAL NUTRITION, RED WHEAT CEREAL (LIKE PUFFED WHEAT) IT COMES IN A PLASTIC BAG WITH RED LETTERING. ONE CUP HAS 12 G CARBOHYDRATE, 0 SUGAR,FIBER 2 G. WHERE SOME OF THE ATKINS PRODUCTS COST ALMOST $3, THIS CEREAL IS ABOUT $1 OR $1.50, CAN'T REMEMBER EXACTLY. IF YOU WANT TO EAT THIS AS A CRUNCH SUBSTITUTE, MELT SOME BUTTER IN A PAN, ADD A LITTLE GARLIC POWDER OR GARLIC SALT, STIR. THEN TOSS IN SOME OF THE CEREAL UNTIL COATED. THEN PUT ON COOKIE TIN IN A 350 DEGREE OVEN, AND HEAT UNTIL YOU THINK IT IS CRISPY ENOUGH. COULD TAKE A LITTLE PRACTICE TO GET IT JUST RIGHT. ONE CUP OF THIS CEREAL HAS 60 CALORIES. PETTEWAYJEAN

HERE US ANOTHER SUBSTITUTE FOR 'CRUNCHY' STUFF. LIKE, WHEN YOU MISS CRUNCHING ON POTATO CHIPS OR PEANUTS. SO, HERE IT IS: BUY SOME GARBONZO BEANS, OR SOMETIMES THEY ARE CALLED CHICK PEAS. GET THE DRY KIND. DUMP HALF OF THE BAG INTO LARGE PAN OF WATER, POUR IN A LOT OF SOY SAUCE, AND ADD ONE ONION CUT IN QUARTERS BOIL UNTIL SLIGHTLY TENDER, BUT NOT OVERDONE OR MUSHY!! DRAIN. SPRAY A COOKIE TIN THAT IS COVERED IN ALUM. FOIL, WITH AN OIL SPRAY, PREFERABLY A GARLIC SPRAY. ROLL THE BEANS AROUND TIL THEY ARE COATED WITH THE OIL SPRAY. SPRINKLE SOME GARLIC SALT ON THEM. BAKE IN A 350 DEGREE OVEN, TURNING FREQUENTLY. YOU WANT THEM TO END UP SLIGHTLY GOLDEN BROWN. AND CRISP. BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVERBAKE!! OTHERWISE, THEY WILL BE LIKE BULLETS!! IT TOOK ME SEVERAL TRYS BEFORE I LEARNED TO GET THEM JUST RIGHT. REMEMBER TO TURN FREQUENTLY. YOU SHOULDN'T EAT THESE UNTIL YOU REACH THE STAGE OF THE ATKINS DIET WHERE YOU ARE ALLOWED BEANS. THIS IS A GOOD SOURCE OF PROTEIN, LO FAT, AND GOOD!! EAT THEM LIKE PEANUTS.

I found the Atkins Almond was too sweet also. I mixed it in a large container with a box of Low carb Total. Cereal is something that is easy to overdo on, I make sure I measure out 30 grams on my electronic scale, and use 1/3 c of Hood carb count down milk. Although I'm on OWL and have gone through all the rungs, I'm still afraid of eating grains. I limit eating cereal to only once or twice a week at the most.
