  • Can anyone remember?

Can anyone remember when the Christmas goods didn't appear in the shops till after Bonfire Night (5 Nov in UK)?

Perhaps the same used to be true in USA, but "after Thanksgiving"?

    Re: Can anyone remember?

LOL, I remember those days. Its really ashame, Christmas is now all about money and gifts and how much money we can drop off at the Mall. And we go right along with it. My friend here in Japan thinks if there aren't at least 3 presents under the tree for her kids from her, from him and from Santa, its a bad year.
I really love Thanksgiving and its my favorite holiday because its about family and food

I'm with you Labarum and Desertthorn - I hate to see the christmas lights for sale at the cash and carry warehouse in August!!

When we were kids the first decorations we saw each year were those gummed paper chains we made on the last day of school a few days before Christmas and our parents didnt get the house decorated until Christmas Eve!!

O yes, I rememeber those paper chains.

And I think about 15 years ago when my children were quite small we found some coloured gummed strips. How they enjoyed making their own decorations.

I am sure you could find them on *Boxing Day.

But there is not so much pressure this coming year. Last Easter was about as early as it could be.

                  Re: Can anyone remember?

Although most stores are displaying Christmas ornaments, trees, etc., well before Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving (a Friday, and also a day off work for most workers) is still the biggest shopping day of the year in the U.S. It usually marks the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season.

As a Catholic, it seems to me that we start the season too soon and end it too soon. Most folks have already forgotten about Christmas by the time Epiphany rolls around. Christmas day is only the first day of the 12 days of Christmas -- not the last. I guess once all those gifts are opened people are done with Christmas -- forgetting what the whole thing is really about.

That's strange, when I was growing up, the Macy's parade was always on Thanksgiving day. Santa on his sleigh was always the last thing in the parade.

guess I should have explained it was the White plains store. they reran the parade wiht the floats in white plains NY and it was after thanksgiving. We did go to the downtown one on turkey day and got our pics on TV according to our souther cousins who swore they saw us but my Dad didn't like all the driving and stuff.
