  • In a non moving boat!

Well I am seriously frustrated. My weight loss goes between 6 to 11 lbs. I have not seen ANY change in the scale in almost a month, and though I am smaller in some places, even the inches have not really changed.

I HAVE had a LOW thyroid in the past but not enough for pills, and re-reading Dr. Atkins book today on my supplements I DO have to get more faithful on them.

But I also went to the Health food store for some help too. I am now taking Bladderwack. It is an Herb that helps Type "O" Bloods thyroid . So we shall see. I HAVE taken it in the past but not faithfully.

One test for low thyroid I tried today, and it certainly makes you wonder. I bought a thermometer to also take my temperatures as Dr. Atkins recomends, so that may give me some indication too.... if these DO point in that direction, I am off to the DR. for a BATTERY of thyroid testing!!!

Don't know what else to do. I mean I have been on Induction since the 30th. of March, you would THINK something real would happen!

Anyone else in this boat urplequ:

I know it's frustrating. Those of us 50+ folks don't lose as quickly and there are a number of reasons, including the pills we take, our lower metabolism, etc, etc. But what you need to do is focus on what you have lost, think about how healthier you are and will be on this WOE.
When I get into a slump, I increase my water, I write down everything I put in my mouth in fitday to check for carb creep. I add more exercise. :hug Just hang in their and you'll get a sweet visit from the whoosh fairy shorting

Kathy, I know how frustrated you must be feeling. Believe me, I went through several months at a time without andy weight loss. Like Desertthorn said, our body works at it's own pace and we have to be patient. I wish it was faster and that our metabolism didn't slow down until we hit our 80's at least. LOL

I will be interested in hearing what you find out about a possible thyroid problem. Please keep us informed. Other than that, have you checked for a possible yeast problem?? One of our members, Becky Sue, found out this was her problem. There is a simple "spit" test you can take to check for this. Her's is now cleared up and she has started losing again. It's just a thought and you may have already tried it. If not, check it out just so you'll know for sure. Dr. Atkins speaks about this in chapter 15 of the DANDR.

Hang on and please let us know what your find out.

I have not checked the yeast thing out, but don't really have any of those symptoms... From what I have been reading, I am pretty sure it is low thyroid brought on by years of dieting!!!!

          Kathy,

I'm in the same boat. I started Oct, 03, lost 20 pounds in the first 5 months and now have been stalled on the scales since February. Although my family MD frowns & reads me the riot act, my chiropractor tells me that I am turning fat into muscle and that he sees the loss. I have lost 9.5 inches since I started but that has stalled also. I bought new, smaller, clothes a couple of months ago and they are starting to fit a little loose, so maybe I'm about to hit that time when it just seems to fall off overnight. I certainly hope so.

I also have the problem of remembering to take my supplements AND I seem to have the bad habit of forgetting to eat. I was like this before I started this WOE so it is definitely a habit. Who knew that you can't lose weight by not eating?!

Hang in there, you are not alone! :hug

I can sympathize being over 50, having arthritis and hypothyroid. Here's what made the difference for me. I eiminated cream, cheese(eat about once every 4 weeks at most), avacados, olives(eat once in a blue moon). I added significant exercise(40 minutes a day hard cardio buring at least 450 calories and weights 3 times per week). Be strict! It works.

Bonnie, thank you for your post. You are exactly right. It is important to include both "hard" cardio and weight training while doing Atkins. Not only for people who have a lot of weight to lose but especially for "us" over 50 bunch. I know I do not push myself hard enough and if I did I know I would see better results. Weight loss is definitely slower and we definitely have to work harder. Hey ---- we all should have started this WOF long time ago when we were YOUNGER! LOL

                  Preach on!!!! :yes

I wish I could do some hard cardio exercises, but because of knee surgery and back problems, the only exercising my doctor (chiropractor) will allow me to do right now is in the pool and using 2 pound weights for my arms. He stated that he wanted me to do no lengthy walking on dry land because of the impact. I started out by walking a few laps. I couldn't swim more than a quarter of the length of the pool, let alone laps, before I was totally out of breath. I've slowly made my way up to being able to walk a mile in the pool (which is suppose to equal 5 miles on dry land because of the resistance) and can now swim 4 full laps at a time before I have to stop. I found that if I walk 3 laps and then swim 4 laps, then repeat this cycle I can get in about 12-16 laps of each. He finally agreed to let me take water aerobics, with the Senior Class. Let me tell you, some of those ladies in their 60s and 70s can really wear me out! Hopefully he's going to let me start doing other type of exercise soon (on dry land) but I can say that I don't think I could ever give up the water aerobics now because they are too enjoyable, even if it is tiring.

Rhonda, girl, you put me to shame with the pool exercises you are doing. For you, that IS hard cardio. Everyone has different "limits" they have to adhere to and if you were out of breath when you finished your exercises, you definitely were working HARD. With time, you will be able to add more reps or laps and heavier weights, etc. This is hard cardio for you.

IMO, most of our 50+ bodies have limits based upon our current weight and other physical problems that we have to deal with. Believe me, 15-20 minutes of hard cardio is about all I can do right now. I think the main thing to remember is to keep pushing yourself at whatever level you are exercising at. Don't become complacent and keep doing 15 minutes when you could push on to 20-25 minutes after a few weeks. I think that is the key to continuing to improve our bodies.

Exercising takes as much "will power" and dedication as managing the food part of this lifestyle. I'm proud that you are working hard and I'm happy that you are ENJOYING the workouts. Good for you, girl!!!

Keep up the good work. You are doing GREAT!!!

I must make a confession. I have stopped weighing myself. In fact I have put the scales into the dark recesses of my closet and there it shall gather dust until I can "slip" into a pair of jeans that right now require a crowbar to get on!

Well, I'm giving a lot of thought to exchanging husbands and cats too, although ---- I have a dog. The dog is trained 100% and is the perfect lady. On the other hand the husband is only about 75% "trained" and he's not so perfect. You'd also have to know that he is an avid bass fisherman so he spends LOTS of time on the lake. LOL

I agree that we can be very silly creatures. Actually, I haven't weighed in a while myself but it's out of sheer "fear". LOL I can tell in my clothes real fast whether I'm pushing things. So far, I'm still wearing my 12/14's and that is so much better than the 20/22's from a year ago.

Jordan, thanks for reminding me to look for the good things. You are exactly right!!!
