  • Getting absolutely no where

    I have not been lurking around for awhile... have NOT given up on the Atkins program as it is still my favorite DIET if you can call it that. Howwever, after 2 and 1/2 months on this program with no more than 9 lbs. to show for all my efforts I am terribly discouraged. Those first 9 went off the first month and half, have lost NOTHING since.

    I am SURE the biggie problem is my thyroid, and I do have an appointment with my Dr. to really check into this. After years of dieting I KNOW I have really messed up the ole' metabolism!

    I am taking a couple extra things that are SUPPOSED to help but of course I see not results as yet, and wonder if I will.

    I will keep you informed. My Dr. appt. is the 15th.

    Oh BTW, I have had my surgery FINALLY and am doing well in recovery, looking forward to being able to exercise again!

    Hi Kathy, :wave

    Sorry to hear about your stall. I can understand you being discouraged. You probably are aware of this, but, unfortunately, it's not uncommon for stalls to happen.

    See what the Dr. has to say about your thyroid. In the meantime, I know it's easy for someone else to say, but just hang in there with this WOE/WOL. Hopefully, through testing, your Dr. will get to the root of your problem and you can take it from there.

    And as you said you would, PLEASE keep us informed.

      Hi Linda,
      I don't know if I am actually calling this a stall or not... I have not been able to EXERCISE for several months, and I am sure that is a big factor.

      I DO hope that I get help from my Dr. , however!

      I will continue to hang in there!

        I think we lose slower when we are over 50. It took me 2 months to lose 10 pounds on Induction. Then 3 months to lose another 10 pounds. Then 7 months to lose another 10. I have lost a little over 30 pounds in a year...

        Hang in there.. it does not have to be quick...slowly but surely is better to keep it off for good....

        I have done the quick weight loss and it always came back...

          Well I am not expecting QUICK weight loss... though under the Atkins program I did expect it would go FASTER since it seems to do so for so many. I started out quick, but it has been go NO where since!

          Have you been exercising???

          I am hoping that exercise will help once I can get back to doing it!

            Longtimer,

            Did you measure as you did Atkins? If it weren't for my inches coming off every week (I measure every Sunday), I think I'd probably get more discouraged. Did you feel better and have more energy?

            When I see the inches falling off, I know this WOE is performing miracles. Who needs to rely on the scales? TAPE MEASURES RULE!!!!!

              I have measured from day one! I have lost a little, but even THAT has stopped for some time now.

              I never had a problem with energy before, though I do have trouble sleeping, which I think may be the thyroid problem. I am calling my Dr. tomorrow to find out about my blood test I had done.

              I am going to insist like Atkins said, to get on a LOW dose of Natural thyroid. I really do think that is my problem!

              I HAVE started back to walking. Just get around the block right now, slowly because my knee is still NOT all the way back. But I do believe that exercise WILL help alot once I can do it again!

                  Thanks Linda.... I got my results on the thyroid test back, and of course I KNEW it would read NORMAL....

                  I have decided I have to be my OWN best advocate and get on with managing this problem on my own.

                  I have bought some information to help with Thyroid problems, and I do hope it will have more ideas I am not aware of. ONE thing I did not realize, but just about ALL the substitutes for CARBS in the Atkins and other products, is SOY, and SOY is a BIG NO NO if you have low thyriod as it aftects the thyroid NEGATIVELY!!! :yikes . Needless to say it PAYS to read labels!!!!

                    About stalled weight loss issues....the #1 cause (in most cases) is "hidden carbs" that are not being counted.

                    The food label doesn't tell the whole truth in what is in most products.
                    You have to "Do the math" on every food item you buy.
                    Fats=9 calories per gram
                    Carbs=4 calories per gram
                    Protine=4 calories per gram

                    Take for example...
                    The product's total calories per serving might say 75
                    Fats=6 grams (6x9=54)
                    Carbs=7 grams (7x4=2
                    Protine=4 grams (4x4=16)
                    Total=98

                    This product has 5.75 grams of hidden carbs (23 /4=5.75)

                    After doing Atkins for the past 2 yrs...and 130 lbs lighter...I still check every label I buy

                      WOW, I am impressed! Had no idea that the manufacturers are HIDING

                      those pesky little CARBS under the various labeled nutrients!!!!!!!!!!!!

                      There aught to be a law - HIDE THOSE CARBS AND YOU DIE! :guns

                      On a serious note, this must be the reasons why we are advised to shop the perimeters and avoid processed foods like our scales depended on it!

                        Sounds pretty smart to me. I admit I have NOT been counting my carbs like I did when I started, but for me, the stall is more likely a lack of exercise, and I AM trying to get back TO it!

                        I DO read my labels , and have been doing so for years.... but NOW must also watch out that there is LITTLE SOY in them!!! SHEEZE , what next! :confused

                          Hi Longtimer,
                          I know you're not supposed to count calories on Atkins, but since I post everything on Fitday I see the calories anyway. I was shocked to see how may calories putting cream in my coffee actually added. It helps me decide which foods are the most beneficial in carbs, calories and nutrition in general. I eat ALOT of food which includes alot of fat and I find it usually adds up between 1200 and 1800. I would have to force feed myself to go higher. There's been some talk on the board about the effect of having a higher carb day (or days) and mixing it up a little. I had a low-fat friend that used to mix up her fat intake when she had a stall. She would mix up moderate fat and low fat days. Good luck and don't give up!

                            I am with all of the others in saying hang in there, and it sounds like you are doing just that. You actually seem to have a pretty positive attitude, and that is a great help in any situation.
                            I know it took me from Dec.,2002 until Oct., 2003 to lose 41 pounds. I did not lose one single pound during induction, but I did lose inches and that helped to keep me going.
                            Exercise is non-negotiable, and when you have been in a situation where you couldn't it makes if pretty miserable. However it sounds like you are on the mend and getting back into the routine of exercising. So good for you.
                            Watching those labels like you do and as you say "being your own best advocate," I know you will succeed.
                            Take care of yourself and do keep posting. :hug
