  • Do you think the "Rules" change after 50?

I read alot of posts here and elsewhere about people who can play games with their metabolism and go on/off plan at will without consequences. Like a planned cheat for say a couple of weeks, and then get back on plan and drop the weight.

What are your thoughts? In my opinion, this is asking for trouble.

Don't know. Never cheated to any degree. Haven't had potato, pasta or bread in two years, nor any cake except flax muffin.

Quite a few have said to me - "I do Atkins during the week and eat normally (!) at weekends". And I say "You're not doing Atkins then."

I suppose on maintenance such practice could count as carb averaging - it depends on how high the carbs go on the cheat days, I guess.

And whether carb averaging is more of a problem with age, I can't say. More likely to be a problem for the less active of any age.

I am not going to play around like that. I am very happy with the way I eat.

Well done on the half marathon, Betty.

New dress a reward, was it?
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

I think 2 weeks is a short time to be off plan .... and if you go back on induction for 2 weeks you should lose all the weight you put on.

How much could you possibly put on assuming you don't really pig out on really "bad" foods?

well unfortunately for women it is a know fact that we start loosing muscle mass at about age 30, then when we hit menopause...........SIX times that. But, as we all know if we are exercisng we can lessen those numbers. But, mother natures is not kind to us. If we loose muscle mass then it is going to slow down our metabolism. So, it really is a never ending battle. Even getting to goal, if you are not consistant with exercising and watching your WOE you WILL gain weight.

          NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!! SO NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Do you think the "Rules" change after 50?

I read an article a bit back that stated out metablosm ws designed to slow down at a certain age due to the fact as we got older we were less able to go out and hunt and forage for our food. So to answer your question I think as we get older perhaps it is a dangerous thing to do, maybe by being consistant we can trick out bodys to not change.

Don't know about "rules changing" but I can attest to the fact that at 25yo or even 35yo, weight loss happened at a much faster clip than at 49yo. I could lose 10lbs in a month in my younger years, even though I was thin at the time. Now it takes a whole month just to get off 2lbs!

On the positive side of slower weight loss, I think it is beneficial to lose slowly so the skin has a chance to snap back into shape. Young skin is like a rubber band...at 49yo my skin is more like the waist of a stretched out pair of underpants.
