  • Just needing some support today!

    Hi!

I turned 50 in August of this year. Most of my weight is in my waist/stomach! I will be at the 2 week induction mark this Wednesday (the 18th) and I have not lost any weight.

I am counting carbs and doing it BY THE BOOK.

I am terribly discouraged and hope that I will soon see the scale dropping. I am walking 30 minutes every day and just don't know what's up unless it is my blood pressure medicine or an anti-depressant I'm on. I did get my hormones straightened out 3 months ago with NATURAL HORMONES.

Anyone out there that didn't lose during the induction but then starting dropping? I have a wonderful husband who is here for support but he is totally in shape and has an awesome metabolism so sometimes he just doesn't get it.

    Thanks for any input!

Welcome to our over-50 forum family

One of our former admins lost absolutely nothing on induction but moved to OWL and followed through the Atkins phases to reach goal.

I do know that some medications can cause weight gains, so maybe you could ask your doctor to talk to you about what side effects yours might have. Maybe there are others that might work better for you.

And if there are no alternatives then at least you are managing to maintain where others not on Atkins might be gaining

Sometimes our bodies need to spend a little time recovering from previous dietary plans before they are ready to let some of that excess fat leave. So stick with what you are doing for a few more weeks at least.

Are you feeling any different from before you started induction - have you lost any inches so your clothes feel a bit looser?

If you have been exercising when you didn't before, your body might have lost fat but added water to 'protect' you from whatever danger is making your muscles work harder, and once it realises this is a normal work load it will release that water. Water and fat all feel the same to a set of weighing scales!!

One suggestion is to post a typical menu or two to the 'Review my menu' forum for some input from more experienced members - sometimes we cant see where we might be eating off-plan inadvertantly and an unbiased eye can help.

Read the sticky on that forum about what you need to let us know and we might be able to help you 'tweak' your menus if needed.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

Are you taking beta blockers for your blood pressure. According to the good doc, they are a problem, I take them and lose but slowly.
What book are you going by, he has a few and some we don't use at all. We use the 2002 addition of Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution.
Post a menu and let the experts take alook, sometimes you might be eating things that are stallers and don't know it, sometimes you don't eat enough fat, sometimes you don't eat enough, period.

What AD are you taking? I took Effexor XR for a year and actually LOST weight with it. I know some ADs can cause weight gain or slow weight loss, so that may be part of it.

I would suggest that you up your exercise .. maybe walk FASTER for those 30 minutes a day or LONGER ..? I am a HUGE believer in the power of exercise to transform your body composition. You may not see the scale move a whole lot, but you *will* see the tape measure move! So take your measurements and then keep up the exercise!

                I lost 2 lbs!

I am taking 10mg of Lexapro and I gained weight with it right off the bat but for right now I will continue exercising as I wasn't doing that before too much
Also, am on blood pressure medicine which is a beta blocker

Here is my typical day of food:

Breakfast - 2 scrambled eggs with piece of sausage or 3 strips of bacon

Lunch - Cobb salad with turkey, cheese and not too many vegeys. My homemade blue cheese which is 1 carb per 2 tblsp. and I use 2 tblsp.

Snack - 2 chicken tenderloin strips(no breading at all) wrapped in bacon (1 piece total of bacon) or a slice of cheese or some sliced chicken or Turkey wrapped in romaine lettuce

Dinner - Meat and a salad or a vegetable with no more that 7-9 carbs per serving
Sugar Free Jello, no whipped Cream

I will just plug along and stay with it. I know the daily exercise is going to get me there and perhaps make me be able to decrease my blood pressure meds.

You all have been a great support for me and thanks for all your responses!

Well done - so you have lost!

Make sure the bacon has no sugar in it and the sausage no cereal.

If you can lose the sugar free jello - the quicker you can get rid of that sweet tooth, the better. Look for different treats - if I realy want to spoil myself its a slice or two of smoked salmon - much nicer than a sweet nibble.

And don't forget the water - mind you, at this very moment I am drinking Fennel Tea.

                    weigh to go

if you don't monitor your BP at home you should be cause the natural diuretic effect of Atkins eating will lower it some too and you dont want to pass out from low blood pressure. Many folk on blood pressure meds ahve needed dose adjustments.

                    Happy low carbing.

                      Hey Laborum,

Is the Sugar Free Jello bad for you? One good thing is I do not have a sweet tooth at all...never have and I am an a capella singer so "tons of water" has been my motto for years. All I drink is decaf. iced tea and water.

Re: Just needing some support today!

Cassy, I'm so glad to see that the scale finally dropped, at least a bit. Your daily menu looks quite good, so I don't think that's the problem. Unfortunately, some folks are just more metabolically resistant than others.

We had a member on another board who so resistant that the only way she could lose, at all, was to do the fat fast for one week, followed by an induction menu the next. She'd only lose during the week on the fat fast, and then only about a pound for the week. However, she went on to lose well over one hundred pounds, and the change in her appearance, as well as her health, was amazingly wonderful.

Bear in mind, though, that cases like hers are very rare, indeed. I'm just pointing out one instance of someone who falls at the extreme end of the resistance scale. It appears that since you have, now, lost a bit, that you will probably continue to do so as you stay with the program. So, my best advice is to just hang in there. It may be slow going, but you'll still reach your destination. And, as 2Big always reminds us all, this isn't a race to the finish line, and if we just open our minds, we can enjoy each part of the journey.

                        I wish you continued success!

Re: Just needing some support today!

Hello Ksing, I am new to the ADBB, but I am like you and needin encouragement sometimes. I had taken off 52 lbs, since last June, but put 14 back on, and even though I am back on induction, exercising 6 days a week, drinking lots of water, and even inspiring others I have been discouraged lately. I feel stuck and somewhat down when others ask, "Where are you at now, and I've been the same for a month!" I too am on blood pressure medication, was on anti depressants, but now off, and have Thyroid disease. I just feel like I'm working so hard sometimes and it is discouraging. But what I will tell you is to be glad you have a supportive husband as I do. Think in baby steps, it has helped me. When I started I walked with a limp and was told I needed knee and hip replacements. I now walk four miles a day and those surgeries will never be in my agenda. When I get discouraged my husband reminds me of all the positive effects this has had. I may be going slow now, but I know I can never go back. I am counting on this site for help when I need it and I felt by writing you, you know others care and understand! Good luck and hang in and I will try to do that too with the help of this site. Peg

                            Dear Ksing,
I understand how you feel. I had a perfect 2 weeks only to gain two pounds. How discouraging! Then I read chapter 20 again. I realized that my steroid treatment for a knee problem is most likely the culprit, and that I need to keep doing what I am doing. I know I will see the results soon. I agree with the moderator about the jello. Most of us just can't tolerate anything sweet...even diet. We are better off without the distraction. Good luck, hang in there!
