  • Exercise for Seniors.

So what is your exercise of choice. Every day this week, I have heard why we need to exercise after 50 years of age, and they say that it doesn't have to be a lot, so what do you like to do.

There are lots of folks who walk the mall before it opens in the morning. Thats cool because its safer than the streets and not affected by the weather.

There are lots of seniors at my water arobic class but the pool here is a lot colder than the one in Japan was.

PACE is suppose to be a great exercise for folks who have arthritis but I have yet to find a class.

Just wondering what you guys do.

I walk on the treadmill (doing my 2.5 km in 26mins) at the gym because although I don't have arthritis, I have had both Achilles tendons damaged and cannot stand much road impact. I also do the rowing machine (up to 12 mins and 1100m) and the bike at the gym. I'm going to start weights this week (waiting for initial appt with Personal Trainer). All low impact but the aerobic benefits are good.

I've been into the DVD's - Slim in Six, and Turbo Jam series, for the last few months. They are killers, but I feel so good after completing the workouts. I did the gym thing, weight room, treadmill, recumbent bike, and I got bored of them, so thus the move to DVD's in the comfort of my home.

Cycling - on a real bike - out on the roads.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
          he said, 'Don't count calories.'

LOL I tried the exercise ball and am such a clutz, I would roll all over trying to balance. Got a lot of exercise trying to balance myself on it though. Also used the Bonsue, (that half ball thing) and had to hang onto a bad to keep myself balanced.

Hey Lynne! From what I understand the ability to balance is half the battle and that is the part that works your core muscle group! So.... keep trying!

I'm with Betty on this one. Since I was a senior in college, I've had no more use for the word!

In my opinion seniors are people who act and think old! I consider myself a youth in that respect!!!

Oh those fitballs! I have one too. I have to lock the 5 cats out into their cattery before I can get it out of the cupboard, though. So far, I've only fallen about laughing on it. I'm afraid my well developed sense of the ridiculous gives me mental images of what I must look like. I cannot balance on the darn thing! And before I started to lose the weight I had the vision of it exploding if I sat on it - it said weight limit 125kg and I knew I was more than that. Jusy picture it, the incredible exploding fitball. Oh, and it bright green!

                          Hey!

Re: "Senior" - excuzee moi! I am neverrr ze Senior....je suite 100% la Femme!!!! C'est ca!

For exercise I "gentle jog" - only on grass or in several inches of snow to absorb the impact.

I also enjoy doing the "Vids". At the moment I am doing the Slim in 6 one.

Several years ago I went to a health club but was turned off after I developed an infection after using their hot tub.

Now I am too lazy to force myself to go to the bother of driving to a club, waiting for equipment or floor space and having to adhear to their hours.....it is too convienient to plunk on a Vid, grab whatever gear (bands, weights, ball, step, etc,) is being used and follow along. The Vids are fun and I can turn the music up or down just how I like it.
                          (Start -2/2) (Ramp -13/12) (Burn -13/22) (Jog - 110K) (147-4=143)
Mini goal - look smashing in a swimsuit by April 1.

No offense but Im 52 and I dont consider myself a senior. In my line of work as a fire fighter, you get old you get hurt or die.

I do treadmill but because of my Sciatic nerve giving me grief, I have cut it from an hour to a half hour. I do light weights and crunches on my exercise ball as well.
