Does anyone suffer from heartburn since starting Atkins? I went to the E.R last night thinking that I was having a heart attack. I have never been so scared in my life. The Drs. ran a thousand test and decided on Acid Reflux. I had a mild case of this last week also. It was plenty scarey. The good news is that mine heart is strong, my cholesteral is good and since I exercise alot, my resting heart rate is 48-49 BPM. Any thoughts?

I wish I had an answer for you. All I can say is that DH and I used to eat SO many Rolaids that we actually bought them by bulk -- pre-Atkins. I don't believe I've had one Rolaid in the last 7 months -- it didn't even dawn on me until I read your post.

Sorry you had to go through such a scary episode. :hug Perhaps someone else here will have more experience with it than I do.

My mom has GERD which is hiatial hernia, acid reflux. She was told to eat early, no later than 4:30pm. so your food will be digested and out of your stomach before bed time. She also takes Nexium, when she can get samples, because it is expensive!!!
      Hope this helps

Sorry, I had acid reflux bad before Atkins, but since being on this WOE, it is all gone.

Sorry you had such a scare, but glad your heart checked out fine.

I had wondered if it had been a change of diet. Either way, at least I know it isn't my heart. Now onto the problem of being stalled out. This always happens after Induction (which was a month ago). I'm still stuck at 166.

            heartburn

            Hello Mary Ann
I get heartburn if I eat too much at any one time. Didn't happen when I wasn't on Atkins. I suppose we tend not to eat such a large amount of food on Atkins but sometimes it just happens & our insides aren't used to it any more.
I too have stalled after induction but I didn't lose very much. So I am eating more (therefore heartburn!) in order to go back on induction next week to see if that helps.
            All the best

              hello mary jane
i did have an episode of heartburn for the first 3 weeks of doing atkins, had the checkup and tests at docs and nothing showed up so he suggested it may be a certain food intolerance that was causing it.
through sheer elimenation i found out it was a brand of cheese and cucumber that was bringing on my heartburn, since elimenating those foods i no longer have any problems ...just a suggestion you might want to explore

I have GERD which has developed into Barrett's Esophogus, no fun! :nono But the above advise about not eating or drinking anything near bedtime (they told me 3 hours!) and not eating large amounts of food in one sitting is the same thing my doc told me. They advise eating 6 small meals a day instead of 3 big ones, it does help, if you can fit it into your schedule. I take prescription Nexium every morning and prescription Zantac 300 every nite before bed! That's alot of $$$ every month, so try to manage it now before it progresses as far as mine did!

Hi I am new here ! I seen your post and I have had heartburn before Atkins. I still have it some but not as bad. I lost before on Atkins and when I was on it I never had heartburn the last time. I drink (caffeine)coffee . I also drink the diet cherry coke(caffeine) . If you have heartburn stay away from Caffeine it will cause is everytime. Also stay away from mints just because some are low in carbs Mints causes you to get heartburn. Just thought I would let you know from my experience what I have learned. :yes

                          Re: Heartburn

Good advice Tweet and also spicy, hot foods will cause acid reflux. I have a hiatal hernia also and usually the low carb diet makes it better. My prob is coffee, which will cause acid on the stomach. I have had edpisodes BEFORE I started taking Nexium where I thought I was having a heart attack. Nexium has helped me tremendously... and you should have your doctor check if this persists.

                          Good luck to you!

                            Re: Heartburn

i went to the doctor today about the heartburn and i developed stiff muscles and a nasty cold i have been having fever for 3 days turns out i had to tell the doctor what i was doing with this high protine diet and he claimes thats the cause of all this..he said he doesent recomend me doing this or eather to anyone and he said it is dangerous to do the atkins that it could give alot of digestion problems in the future. anyway i mean i listened to him and all but desperation of going thin is taking over me so i desited to keep going with the atkins and i went out and got a bottle of tums just in case it occured again.

                              Re: Heartburn

Mandi, it is my understanding that you might have flu systems caused by the detoxification of the Atkins diet... if you are following it to the letter. (Or you may have a cold... lol!) This will happen to some people in the induction but will go away and you will have more energy than ever.

Have you read the book? If not, it might explain a lot of things to you that may be happening and have some answers also.

Low carbing helps acid reflux for some reason. My suggestion to you, is get OTC Prilosec from your local pharmacy for your heartburn. I have been told by medical doctors that it is the same thing as Nexium only a weaker dosage. They suggested to me to take one Prilosec twice a day for acid reflux.

                              Good luck to you!
