  • Awful quiet out here...

Is it the calm before the storm?

Are all the 50+-ers just laying back and storing up huge amounts of material? Perhaps the plan is to overwhelm the server with the sheer volume of our discourses when posted all at once?

If so I didn't get the memo.

If not I'm disappointed in our age group...we're usually quite chatty.

Nothing happening? No one offered you senior citizen discount or refused it to you at some inappropriate or humorous time/place?

I just won a racquetball tournament this weekend. Beat a 26 year old marathon runner in the finals and never broke a sweat. The look on his young woebegone visage made a lot of those pre-dawn workout sessions worthwhile.

    There...I've broken the ice.

It's just like the men's forum, Bren.

Perhaps the boys like to stay with the girls and the old-uns with the young-uns?

        Re: Awful quiet out here...

I'm on your side on the topic Ms Bren. I'm in better shape now than I was in my 30's, and of course expectations are lower so it seems even better than it is!

BUT this subforum is always too quiet, imo. It's an accomplishment to achieve fitness at any age, however every decade that passes makes it more difficult. I think we compensate with a better sense of identity and discipline as well as experience in the field. Recently I've come to realize that I need to quit screwing around and take my weight/health a lot more seriously than I have in the past. It was simple to get back into shape in my 20's/30's...everything worked on every plan. Pounds just melted away and the physical part came so easy.

Now it can be such a battle! Having a strong base of knowledge helps tremendously, and whichever lowcarb "plan" people may choose to follow has similar underlying science backing it up.

        Knowledge is power.

        Age brings knowledge.

        Therefore....

Huge organization here in the USA, Labarum. Wields all kinds of discount powers for seniors and putatively functions as a political force as well.

But their monthly magazine could use a bit of work, imo.

                Looks similar in function.

We have a lot of jokes about it here but it IS a reality that hits you in the mailbox...they're very persistent. I now have my official old man driving hat (round with a snap on the brim in front) and the required cardigan sweater for housewear. All set!

Bren is being supported by the Dallas Cheerleaders Retirement Fund.

She'll deny it but oh man she was the yellow star of Texas in her heyday ( about 3-4 years ago, actually).

I can razz her because I am her "senior" by almost 3 entire weeks(Sept. 29,1955 here). I believe we ARE both Libras however, so use caution.

YOUR BOTH OLDER THEN ME! And, if I am correct I think Brian is a Libra also?

I will not give in, I will not join AARP. Just cannot bring myself to do it! Anyways, the cheerleaders retirement is working fine for me! (insert wink here).

I for one am loving the fifty something bracket. I personally find it quite liberating! Young enough to do things and old enough to blame blunders on senior moments?

Obviously we're the "chatty" astrological sign...

I agree with Bren. We're living in the best of all worlds right now. Anytime I lose at racquetball I can just start limping around, and if I win I get to use a lot of "spanked by yer Grampa" lingo. Win-win situation all the time! (not that I ever lose, but it COULD happen)

Over here we only get a letter when we hit fifty saying:
"Congratulations! Now you are fifty, come and get your free pap test/mammogram."!!
Well... they did invite to a "50 this year" lunch too.

But three years on, I still get offered the free pap test and mammogram...but no lunch!

Nothing like that here, I'm afraid. You have to wait until you are 65 and can get a govt senior's card. Only 11 years and 3 months to go!

But I did start my Red Hat group (there is another thread on this section) and we have great fun. Thursday week we are going to the very swank Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast http://www.palazzoversace.com.au/flash/index.htm for High Tea (I get round the food by picking the strawberries off and eating those). Anyway, it's for the fun and friendship, not the food.

I have never got it woth the age thing - why is it such a big issue. My usual response is that we all age at the same rate, one day at a time.
