I too would like some ongoing encouragement from the 50+ crowd.
If you're exercising (kickboxing sounds fun!) and eating right, it'll work just fine. You haven't got much left to lose so you'll soon be there. Be warned though that those last few pesky lbs can be the devil to lose... that's quite normal... as long as the direction is right, all's well. We over 50s just have to cultivate patience a wee bit more.

I highly recommend kickboxing. It's a great workout, and you wouldn't want to meet up with me in a dark alley now! I throw a mean punch!

          Hi All,

          This is my first post!

I am 53 and lost 75 plus pounds on Atkins last year, and have been maintaining since May of 2007. I used Atkins 72 plan and the weight came off very easily! I also exercised 5-6 times per week. I have found that so long as I dont eat faux foods (bars and shakes) that the original plan always works.

          Good luck!

Well it worked for me. The standard "balanced" diet just got worse and worse for me as I aged. Get rid of the carbs, and I can manage my weight again.

Started walking then took up cycling. 10-20 miles a day on a fast touring bike - like a racing bike with drop handlebars, but not so "head down". When I have access to a swimming pool, I like that. I NEVER run. I hate that.
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
                he said, 'Don't count calories.'

Re: 50+ who lost on Atkins/ I need support!

                    Hey friends...

Thanks again for all the answers---I am still struggling it seems to get
                    it all right//the eating-water-exercise routine.

I do alright on one and then don't do the other two so I feel like a failure.
Or I will do all three for a couple of days then a day comes when I don't
do all three and I just shake my head and give up--too hard for me.

I have done the WOE before (with success) but for some reason cannot
get back into the the "mindset" that I can and need to be successful in
this. I have had a hard emotional time turning 50 this year and accepting it.
My body, hair, skin, emotions, mind etc, have all seemed to change and
it has been alot for me to handle. I live out in the country and have few
women friends to talk with about this and my mother died 2 years ago of
colon cancer so she is not around. Any other 50+ ladies struggled with these
kinds of issues? Thanks for any help.

Re: 50+ who lost on Atkins/ I need support!

Oh, I can so empathise Pie4me, because I too had a tough time with 50. Tougher than with 40, for sure. There were complicated personal reasons for this though... Thing is, getting older is not a pleasant fact of life.

I too lost my mother (at 51) and it was a huge blow as we were very very close. Her death left me with load of bad emotional baggage: Guilt that I never had enough time for her when she was alive, elderly and alone etc. Guilt is a bad emotion... it can colour your entire life.

Strangely what has helped me a lot is taking a little time each day for meditation, relaxation and positive thinking.
Having always been a bit of a pessimist, I'd never believed in the power of positive thinking, but now I have to admit to being a convert. It really does help me a great deal. Quite a discovery.

The other thing that helped me immensely was losing weight... and of course, for that, I have Atkins to thank and this board, with all the special people who encourage and support ceaselessly. Thank you all and thank you !

Before you know it, the weeks and months will have gone by and you'll find yourself more comfortable in the "fifties", I'm sure.
I'm 54 now and doing ok.

As for Atkins, maybe if you just tried to relax into the mindset of this WOE... slip into it without stress I mean... and try not to be too hard on yourself when you miss your exercise one time, or don't quite make your water target. Be kind to yourself.

With a bit of self-nurturing, I bet we can turn these fifties into the fabulous fifties... especially if we think the right way.

                      Worth a try anyway.

Re: 50+ who lost on Atkins/ I need support!

I was 55 plus when I started Atkins and I lost 102 pounds in 10 months. I am now 58 and still have that plus more off, but it has stalled out for the last while. I was walking with 2 quad canes when I started and now I can walk for an hour up and down hills. I also use a recumbent stepper several times per week and lift weights for 30 minutes, three times per week. I have a lot of health problems, but I find a way to work around them.

                          Hi Pie,
I started Atkins in 2003 at age 52, and have struggled to stay on track. I always lose weight though as long as I stick to this woe, and I feel so much better. This is the last time I am going to "start". I am really commited to eating this way the rest of my life. I am terrible at doing the exercise. I try to do it as often as I can muster the ambition. As a result I lose weight slower. The trend is in the right direction though. I am not in a race to see how fast I can reach the goal as long as I get there eventually.

When you make a bad food choice just get back on the right track and contine on. Don't beat yourself up about it. Keep on keeping on. We are here to help you learn to make the right choices so you will reach your goal. There will be plateaus which are sometimes hard to get past. We are here to help you get past the hard times and help celebrate goals reached.
