  • New to this forum ...

Hello, I'm a 50+ second-timer to Atkins. Since my first time on Atkins (in 2003) I've successfully lost weight on NutriSystem and Weight Watchers. I also lost on Atkins ... my problem is not losing weight, but maintaining. Bet you've all heard that before.

The Atkins website that I used 5 years ago, has dramatically changed format and products, so I'm looking for Atkins and/or low-carb support groups. This one looks like it could work for me. Let me hear from you!

    Hi
    Welcome to the forum

Did you stay on induction all the time when you did Atkins previously or climb the OWL carb ladder and discover your CCLL?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

My husband and I stayed on the 2 week induction, and then slowly followed the program as designed. It took us quite a while to begin losing, but it finally kicked in after about 3 weeks. We both lost about 30 lbs., but then we fell off the wagon and went back to our old habits. The reason we've returned to the Atkins program is because we both love meat and dairy products, so it works fairly well for us.

You've done very very well on Atkins. How do you stick with it so long?

Also, how did you add your ticker to your signature. I can't get it to work.

I think that unless you are a 'supporting member' you can only have one image in your signature, and the ticker would count as an image as well as your little dog picture

I suppose because I was so very heavy before Atkins I dont want to risk putting those pesky pounds back on again

Also I find that I dont really miss anything like bread, pasta, rice and sweet things, so it is really not a struggle when I can eat so many other foods that I like.

I do sometimes make 'bread' using Atkins-legal ingredients like linseed (flax) and ground almonds or the revolution rolls from DANDR so I can have an occasional bacon sandwich or a bun with my hamburgers. And there are many other substitutes like 'caulirice' instead of real rice.

              Hello and welcome!

I think that after a while, as Elizellen says, you no longer miss the carby "treats" like bread, pasta, sugary desserts so much. That certainly happened for me. I also think that finding good substitutes for the foods you used to love is also a huge help. If you eat things you really like, you don't feel deprived. Flax crackers with cheese or butter hit the spot for me, and I don't miss bread at all. For pasta, I occasionally go the Dreamfields road...but less and less.

If you stick with it, it'll happen.

Okay, I'll give the ticker another shot. Thanks to all who have responded, and I love the support. BTW, where do you find Flax Crackers and are the really low in carbs? I'm in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas.

One more thing, how do you turn on the HTML code?

can't help ya on the flax crackers since i'm in a completely different place than texas. they are lower in carbs. remember to always read labels.

I'd love to join 2nd time around

I'm just beginning again, so I'm still in the induction phase. First time around, I lost about 30-35 lbs. and it stayed off for a few months. But then my old habits crept back in, and I have absolutely no will power unless I'm on some sort of weight loss program. Does anyone else have that problem?

I dont know if anyone buys them, but I make my own.

                          Very simple recipe
Mix equal volumes of ground linseed (flax in USA) and water, say 2 Tablespoons of each, and let sit to thicken up.

Then spoon on to baking sheet if oven cooking or parchment paper if microwaving and press into flat 'biscuit' shapes.

                          Cook till crisp.

You can mix something like chilli or spices into it or even add grated cheese or chopped chives to flavour them but they are quite tasty just plain.

As linseed/flax is virtually all fibre they are very low in net carbs. However, using them on induction is only allowed according to the 'constipation rule', using larger quantities should really be left till the seeds/nuts rung of OWL.

Okay, now you've really got my curiosity going ... what is "the constipation rule."

Also, on the crackers ... to what temperature do I set the oven for baking?

                              From the Rules of Induction
                              12. If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables.
I know it doesn't actually say we can use these fibre 'supplements' as ingredients in cooking, but many of us prefer this way of adding them rather than mixing them in water or making a shake of them.

As to the oven temp for baking flax crackers, I usually microwave mine so am not sure - maybe something like 200-300 degrees fahrenheit?
