  • 50+ and determined!

Hi everyone! I forgot to leave a post when I signed up...so here I am. My ISP is pretty crappy since I have Huges.net satellite... so bear with me if I don't post everyday. (It limits usage, and I run a forum for friends to hang out).

Anyway, it has been just over 2 weeks and I have issues that may keep my scales from moving... severe edema and menopause and just quit smoking a few months ago.

I did buy some new scales and weighed in the middle of the day so my ticker may not be accurate. I may have lost 6 pounds of fluid... but then.... I can fluctuate like crazy because of the edema (severe fluid retention). The doc wants me to take fluid pills but I am not taking them... and I am hoping this WOE will help me lose some of the fluid. This is my second time around and I didn't have edema before... and lost tons of fluid and had to take Potassium supplements ... and also add the Morton's Lite Salt to my diet. Now I pray I can lose some of this fluid I carry around all the time.

Well... enough rambling... just wanted to say hello! I took some pictures yesterday... and hoping I will be able to use one of these as my before pics when I lose heaps and heaps of inches!

Have a great weekend and stay cheat free my friends!

    Nice to "meet" you, QS.

I hope that Atkins will help with your water retention issues. It has made a big difference in me. My face is no longer puffy and I had forgotten that my ankles were actually so small. They had been larger from water retention for a long time.

I am not yet taking potassium supplements, but I did switch to Lite Salt. It makes a difference.

This morning, before riding my bike, I felt tired. I put a little lite salt in my hand and licked it (yerk!) and immediately felt better. Apparently that provided enough potassium to make a difference.

    I love your fur baby!

Oh thank you so much! I am so impressed that you have already lost 11 lbs! Oddly enough my doctor told me when all this weight started coming on... (8 yrs ago) just to watch and wait until it bottomed out. I also have a hiatal hernia.

I gained 50 lbs that first year ... talk about freaking out... and yes, I changed doctors 4 times in 5 years... and now when I go for a check up (I moved) they just look at me like I am just fat and need to go on a diet... they didn't know my past doctors just sat back and watched me gain weight.

So, (big sigh) I don't know what I am doing... just thought I would take matters in my own hands. I am counting carbs and hopefully next week I will start some tapes I bought - called "the FIRM" and try to "get sweating" ... ha ha! I also have a LPN that is taking more tests to find out if there is something that caused all of this 8 years ago... that possibly didn't show up then.

I am determined not to cheat... because ....... I want to lost this weight I have gained and the heck with doctors! lol!

Oh boy, didn't mean to rant! Sorry!

Oh thank you so much! You are so sweet.

I haven't really posted in a while because, I didn't have any wonderful news to post and I know we all get down and out. My scales and I hate each other.... now I know why I haven't had any in years... Arggggghhh! My weigh in day is Wednesday... I went up 5 pounds! This Thursday night (last night) I came so close to cheating... not for any other reason than I was getting bored of my foods and felt defiant! LMAO! But, I didn't!

Anyway, just because I felt really hungry when I got up this morning, I thought I would try the "cursed" scales again... and lost the hateful 5 pounds that appeared overnight and lost an additional pound. Well! I was so pleased ... I threw caution to the wind... ran into my office (grabbed the tape measure).

I lost another inch in my waist... that is 3 inches in a bit over 3 weeks!
AWESOME! I have been given a reprieve finally! Yipppeeeee!

I need some new recipes. I am cauliflowered out! My last batch of "fake mashed taters" made me ill... it's lost it's appeal.

                Valentines Day is tomorrow...

                      Re: 50+ and determined!

Update! I lost another inch in my waist...woo hoo!

I really have had a week. I believe in my earlier post I mentioned having some tests taken to try to find some answers to my weight gain, etc. The fluid isn't laying around in my ankles like it did before, so that is good. I did find that Pork Rinds put the fluid back on me faster than anything... all that salt! Well, I was trying to find something cruchy...ha ha!

I remiss... this week I did a Glucola fast for a couple of hours and my last read on blood sugar was 173. Yikes! I haven't talked with my health provider as she was on vacation this week, but the dietician gave me a meter and told me to increase my carbs to 100 a day! Another yikes!

Now, I don't want to go against her. Please, anyone.... I do need your advice. She said, anything under 100 carbs a day can damage your kidneys and brain. She scared me to death! Not just about fearing no weight loss...but kidney or brain damage!!

Let me hear from you, please!

QS, that sounds like a bigger heath problem than I can answer. Is there someone you could see to get a second opinion?

Under normal circumstances, she is 100% wrong. You can look through the success stories and most memorable posts and see awesome testimonials to the ability of the Atkins Diet to restore normal blood sugar and cholesterol levels, mental alertness, emotional balance and all-around health.

However.... if you have been following the plan as written and are still dealing with that ultra high blood sugar level, then there is more here than a non-medical person should give advice on.

Hugs, and good luck! And please DO keep us posted!

                          Re: 50+ and determined!

I think the woman is full of hooie. Just look at the long term Atkins eers on this board and not one suffers from kidney problems, or brain problems. (Well maybe brain problems, but thats not because of the diet LOL)
The only thing we really cut from our diet is white - flour, sugar, rice, etc....
When they manufacture white flour they first remove the wheat seeds bran, its 6 outer layers and the germ which contains 76% of the vitamins and minerals. 97% of the dietary fiber is also lost.
THen it gets worse, what is left is bleached, preservatives are added, its then aged with chlorine dioxide. Its further whitened by adding chalk, alum and something called ammonium carbonate to make it look and feel nice. Another chemical is then added as an anti-salting agent.
Then, so they can make us believe that it is good for us, they call it Enriched by adding, not natural but synthetic nutrients.
Ask this nutritionist what she had for breakfast and if it had white flour (and what doesn't) then you can believe she doesn't know a thing about health.
White rice, same thing, they remove everything good about it just leaving the white.
White sugar, same thing. after its refined what is left consists of pure, refined carbohydrates. The body cannot utilize this refined starch and carbohydrate unless the depleted proteins, vitamins and minerals are present.
Your body will only get healthier on this program as long as you eat good, natural, foods, and there is nothing on this program but good, natural food.

LOL! I believe you and I know a lot of Doctor's are also believing now...but obviously not this group. This lady says she is the "Educator" for Diabetes in this clinic for the health providers and patients. She is the Dietician. I live in a hick town ... maybe that explains it... I had never heard eating less than 100 carbs a day would cause that kind of damage either....but I only know what Dr. Atkins and Dr. Eades tell us and it is all good!

The first diabetes "Educator" I saw wasn't a dietician -- she admitted she knew nothing about the subject except for what she did herself. My dietician doesn't believe in Atkins so after I tried her "way of life" as she called it I chucked the books into the bin and started this WOE....and haven't looked back. Oh, and yes I did cancel my appointment with her for next week - I don't need to listen to her tell me that 15 carb points equal 1 full carb and I need to be eating 12 full carbs a day.....in other words 180 of what we call carbs daily. All I was doing was measuring, figuring out what to have next and watching the clock. I was miserable and my family just about put me in the shed out back until I came to my senses.

I posted on another of your threads to check the diabetes forum here -- there are a lot of people who are going through the same thing you are and can help you. Diabetes & Atkins Low Carb Living - Atkins Diet

I wouldn't do much before you talk to your doctor - have an A1C done and see what meds she/he wants you on. Go find MotherEarth (Sherri) - she has maintained an over 100 pound loss for over 3 years and reversed her diabetes with this WOE -- if her story doesn't give you hope I don't know what would. She's a real inspiration to me!
